    Hi all
I had a consultation in optical express in Dublin and the total cost for Advanced custom view wavefront and intralse is €4,560 (excludingtax relief and health insurance. I am just wondering if there would be a difference if I had it done in Belfast. Has anyone any experience with the Belfast clinic. Is there a difference in price between the north and south. I would be surprised if there was not.

M Hairt, bit of a hike up from the 595 per eye.....The Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast is advertising Wavefront for UK 2000 (both eyes). I've looked at their site www.cathedraleye.com and looks impressive. They don't just do laser eye surgery and treat all eye conditions. This is important if there are any complications. Yes, you can also claim tax relief if you have surgery in the North. You want to think about aftercare appointments and if you can travel back to Belfast.

Oh I'd shop around I would! The problem is not many places do Intralase either. It's cheaper in Dundrum Eye Clinic (which is owned by Eye Laser Ireland) where I got my eyes done with LASEK it's €2,050 per eye there standard price so €4,100 + €200 standard pre-op exam (which is standard is most eye clinics) so €4,300 without tax relief or health insurance but if you have VHI or Quinn you can get it for €3,600 for then you may be able to claim a further tax relief of either 20% or 41% (if you get it done before December) so if I were you, I'd try there because it's a little cheaper and really good for your type o treatment. And the Luas runs straight underneath it. Besides most other places don't do Intralase LASIK so your selection is limited.

I wouldn't advice getting it done in Belfast because you will have to go back all the time for lots and lots of check-ups like the morning after and then during the week to get the bandage lens they insert to be removed. There are several other appointments. And if you don't know anyone there whom you could stay with, you'd have to pay to stay somewhere adding to expenses and then there's the conversion rate to sterling. Also if anything happened and you needed to ring the surgeon and you were back here that'd be difficult. My advice would be to stay local. Well if you're interested the website fr Dundrum is Dundrum Eye Clinic or Eye Laser Ireland. Same place! Feel free to PM me.

    Good Luck! ;)

Finally got around to going for a consulation in Belfast with Optical Express. The cost for the exact same treatment as above is £3,200. That is a difference of over €1000. You can still claim your health insurance and tax back and you can have your aftercare treatment in their clinics in the south. I have now booked mine for the 13th of April.

Hi M Hairt, I'm also considering laser eye treatment in Belfast...it appears much more economical, have you had a consultation? If so how did it go?

    Hi
I had my surgery on the 3rd of March in Dublin. I booked the consultation in Belfast but in order to claim back health insurance I had to have the treatment in the south, which suited me perfectly. I paid through Belfast so the total cost was €3,150 and just after getting over €1,000 back from health insurance. It went fine. It is a little uncomfortable but not actually sore and only takes a few minutes. I would really recommend it. It is so strange to be able to see again. If you are getting it done with Optical Express there is a big saving if you book through Belfast.
