Switching Sides

Yup, another one of those threads. I'm a 5 year Canon user (300D, 350D, 20D, 40D, 5DMKII ordered), who recently had, all but 2 of, my lens collection veritably destroyed during a flight. Since the accident happened I've been wondering if now was the time for me to make the switch to Nikon, specifically the D300 and the D700. My insurance cheque arrived today and coupled with the impending delivery of the new 5D I really need to make a decision.

I have no further investment in Canon gear, with only a nifty fifty and a 24-135mm left in my repertoire, but I still have that emotional attachment so to speak. I'm primarily a portrait and fashion photographer, but I do a lot of night setting shoots and city abstract work aswell. High usable ISO appeals greatly to me. The FF D700 appeals, and as I am/was going for the 5D anyway the D300 would just be a bit of a stepdown imo. Should I just wait for Canon to step up? I was more than a little disappointment with the 5DII upgrade...Nikon seems to be really innovating in the space, and I love innovation.

    Any advice? Thanks:o

I can hear the shouting, screaming and gringing-of-teeth from here!
Are you 'allowed' move from one to the other, what are the implications for you, a lynching/beating ?

Since you now have almost no attachment, it would be the best time to switch.

However, like anything else, there is a back and forth between Canon and Nikon. I'd bet that next year, Canon will come out with something new and innovative that will make Nikon users want to switch.

    Exactly as Paul said.

Will you be getting any compensation for the damage?

Personally, I'd wait. Your going to make a loss on your Canon gear if you sell up.

I think at the level you're talking (D700 & 5DII) it depends more on what need the camera to do. Both cameras deliver on image quality, but have different features that make them suited to different tasks.

Also, the rumor mill is all excited about new stuff from Nikon next week.

I have a d700 and love it, but I'm a Nikon shooter. I think you'd be mad to rush into anything until the 5D mkII comes out. If I was in your position and had no vested interest or lenses in either brand I would be looking at the 5D mkII.

it could be said the fact that you're asking this question means you want to change deep down. (subconcious voodoo and all that)

Depends, I like the fact that Nikon trickle down a lot of the pro features down to comsumer cameras eg weathersealing but I prefer the image quality from Canon beacause I have more control over it. L lenses seem to be cheaper than their Nikkor types

Try out some nikon gear first would be my tack, if it's very different that may swing it one way or another. I've only canon experience so I've no opinion to express on nikon, like canon there seem to be plenty of happy users getting good results.

If you do change, your compare and contrast experience would make an interesting read...

I have a 5DII ordered and should have it when it becomes available here (preorder list), I figure though it won't be too hard to sell if I do end up switching.

Very true, as I said in my OP I admire Nikon's current innovations in this space and I want to support innovation, not stagnation.

I actually didn't know that, thanks:o I will obviously have to rebuild my collection and will want to do so with quality lenses, specifically fast primes and UWA lenses.

I'm test driving a D700 while my friend is out of the country for the next week. I'm so-so familiar with Nikon, my sister has a D40 and photo-partner uses a D2H. I find usability much of a muchness if I'm totally honest.

My wants in a camera are good skin tonalities and usable high IS0 -> portrait and city/abstract night photography.
