    Ive been reading an article on the differences between Polyeurothane vs Nitrocellulose.

    Apparently fender used to just use Nitro, but its far from as durable as poly, but nitro allows the wood to resonate more ( i know there are other subelties but i wana keep the post short). Do fender use Poly now or are they still using Nitro?

    ( the article i read is here http://www.edroman.com/techarticles/polyvsnitro.htm
    )

    The Poly vs. Nitro debate is one of those things.

    I like Nitro.

    They've used poly since the middle of 1968, IIRC on everything except one off custom shop orders and specific nitro coated models (ie Highway 1 - but I believe this is a nitro coat on a poly base).

    Edit -> Ed Roman :rolleyes:

    Let me start by saying that Ed Roman isn't a reliable source. He's a little troll that spouts rubbish. I wouldn't be surprised if he posted in this thread soon... I think he likes to google search himself. :rolleyes:

    All you need to know about vintage Fenders and the paints is here.

    As far as currently used paints go, the Mexican and Squier guitars use Polyester and the American guitars (other than HWY1) use Polyeurathane. I believe the Japanese Fenders use Polyeurathane also. Highway 1 have a polyeurathane undercoat and satin Nitrocellulose finish.

    Custom shop uses nitrocellulose for the production models and for everything is it's whatever people what, I would assume. :P

    I have basses and guitars with each finish (not Fender). A guitar with Nitro finish, a bass with nitro, two with polyeurathane and one with polyester. While the Nitro is nice and everything, for durability I like Polyeurathane. Also the nitro can get a bit sticky at times and newly finished instruments smell strongly for several months. :)
