Really depends on your budget and applications you intend to run. With Dell you get your base machine and decide what parts you want to upgrade to.

I wouldn't advise starting with their cheapest base machine . Go for a mid range or higher ( if the budget allows) and put as upgrade as much as you need or can afford. Get maximum memory as a priority and at least 2GB if Vista is on the machine .

If you intend to run a load of games then you need quality video/ audio cards as well as a bigger screen probabley. You will also want the highest spec CPU you can afford. Hard Drives are usually more than sufficient for most home users but what you need does depend on intended usage.

EG a full 2 hour DCD can be 7GB or if you have a large music / photo library you will quickly use up a standard issue HD.

if its to be used mainly for the internet why is processing power important?

Have you though of going onto sites like komplett/elara/dabs etc and spec up your own machine. Probably not a good idea if you dont know much about components but we can help! Oh, budget will have a big impact on this decision

agreed with above, but 2gb is no where near enough ram for vista. 4GB minimum ! To be honest just ring dells sales line and tell when what you want to do with it. They will point you in the right direction. And for the love of sweet baby jesus, stay the hell away from pc world.

It will just be used for the internet mainly and for photos and music itunes etc,
i have an old computer and its soooo screw its not even funny,
price rang is less than 800 if possible,
would dell be my best bet?
would they pcs be better than the one aldi or other places are selling?
    thanks for your help

"At the end of the day" its your call. As far as I can tell equivalent one on Dell is around the €1100 mark with a one year warranty (vs 3 years on lidl one).

The aldi one last week was better again but long gone...(4GB ram, 1TB memory & defo had hdmi)...I'm going to wait until this one comes out again...

That's hardly comparing like with like, the Dell one is a top quality gaming machine in a vastly superior chassis, with a vastly superior power supply, and a vastly superior video card.

599 was a decent price for the Lidl Machine but for your intended uses Dell will better serve you. What's the point in buying a quad core machine when all you're doing is internet browsing and the like? And I hope no-one starts this 'future-proofing' nonsense - for those sort of tasks, I've still got an ancient Pentium 4 that's of no distinguishable difference to my main E8600 setup for those sort of things.

Go to the Dell small business page, anyone can buy there. At the moment this is what you will get for 520 euro including delivery:

    Dell Vostro 220

    -19" Widescreen monitor
    -E2200
    -2GB Ram
    -250GB Hard Drive
    -Intel X4500

That's fine for Vista and definitely twice as much as you need for the tasks you've described, if you're very concerned about RAM another 2gb would set you back 30 euro from any online store, don't pay Dell for upgrades is the golden rule.

Buy the Lidl machine, and a monitor on top of that, you're left with a machine that costs 750 euro and is virtually 0% faster in day to day tasks - don't waste your money buying hardware you absolutely don't need. The Aldi machine would be an ever bigger waste.

If you already have a monitor you can buy the Vostro 220 without one and end up paying about 400 for the machine including delivery. If anyone if your family is a gamer you'd be able to buy a separate card off somewhere like Komplett.ie - all in all, a machine that would easily outstrip the Lidl one in games and include the 19" monitor to boot is managable within the 599 price of the Lidl machine.

nothing there needs a lot of processing power (except maybe norton). btw you're using the wrong term there. to get lots of photos and other files on the computer you need lots of hard drive space, not memory. hard drive space stores all your files. where memory comes in is if you want to run a lot of stuff at the same time or use very powerful programs. a large hard drive would be 500GB, a lot of memory would be 4GB

think of hard drive space as a filing cabinet where you store stuff when you're not using it and memory as your desk where you put stuff that you're using right now. much less space on a desk but you can access it a lot faster
