Pointer freezing?

    I've a Dell Inspiron 6400, I'm running XP SP2. I've got a problem with it at the moment. My mouse keeps freezing up on the laptop, and it's getting really annoying. The touchpad seems to stop responding every now and then. I've no idea what exactly is causing it. It goes away after a minute but halfway through a webpage it will stop moving, and I have to switch to the directional keys. The mouse won't move and it won't scrool down from the touchpad then either.
    I've run a virus check and have done a spyware search too and nothing came up. I've had the laptop a while but it's a new hard drive. I'm thinking it could be a driver issue? I had to go get the ones for the laptop again after my old hdd took a dive in me. I don't think it's a broken touchpad as it works fine most of the time and it unfreezes again after it stops working.
    Any thoughts?

    Have you tried cleaning the touch pad?

    It's clean. I wipe down the screen, keypad and touchpad every now and then.

    Any help on this? It happens pretty much everytime I go on the net for more than a minute.
