Why are people allowed to bring such big bags on flights?

I find, since the charging for checking in bags for flights that people are now carrying on luggage more. This is totally understandable but the size of some of the bags is unbelieveable.

I was on a flight recently and everyone seemed to carry on their bags. People weren't putting their bags in the cupboard above their seat. Some were throwing their bag anywhere and then looking for a seat. Others tried to put it in the cupboard above their seat but others had used it with their oversized bags.

My bag was quite small and there was no space above my seat so I ended up putting it underneath the seat infront of me. But why should I have to?? I've paid my fare, same as everyone else. I should be entitled to use the space above my seat for me.

What do you think?? Should they be stricter about the size of the bags people carry on to planes??

hard to know isnt it? there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to it at all, for example i was goin to the UK and was able to carry on a sports bag, school bag and a teddy (dont ask!), and noone batted an eyelid, but comin back from spain i just had a school bag and a plastic bag with a bottle of vodka in it, and wasnt allowed on till i stuffed the vodka into the bag (and i wasnt the only one, heard them sayin it to every passenger) both ryanair by the way.

I suppose take the rough with the smooth, they'd get stricter the one time ya needed to carry on a big or heavy bag, but it is a pain in the arse when ya have nowhere to put your bags.

I agree with original poster. This is just crazy the way people can bring hugh suitcases on board with them. I was coming back from San fran in August and the amount of suitcases brought as carry on was unbelievable. and there I was checking in a small backpack and worrying if my carry on pack was small enough to pass through.

its silly and something should be done about it imo. I personally don't mind hugh carry on's as long as its the same for everyone and there's some consistency to the method.

Ryanair are now starting to check the size of bags at the gate, but only on some flights and at certain airports.

I agree. I don't mind carrying on larger luggage as long as there is enough room for everyone to do the same but there isn't enough room. So therefore, they should be stricter with the size of the bags, giving everyone an equal space for their bag. It's only fairer IMO. :)

any bag thats fits in the overhead locker (lengthways so as to facilitate numerous other passengers bags) and is under the weight limit should be allowed imo

But the problem is that they sometimes don't fit lengthways and sometimes don't look like they are within they are in the weight limit. On the recent flight I was on some people found it hard to lift their bag into the cupboard above the seats. One needed help to lift it.
