Carrying on from my O'Briens thread, here's my latest rant:

So I noticed a cheap xbox 360 game on Amazon, thought it would be a handy stocking filler for the nephew.
Game was £3.31, UK residents get free delivery.
Threw it in my basket thinking P&P couldn't be much more.

    Get this:
    amazon.jpg

They charged me £4.98 P&P PLUS they added 21% VAT on the P&P, as well as the VAT on the game.!!!!!
VAT on P&P are you kidding me? P&P ended up over 6 punds sterling.
I know from buying on eBay it costs £1.60 roughly for a private seller to mail a game/DVD over to Ireland.
Hold S hit that is outrageous. the final total tripled to £9.44.

Absolutely no way, never visiting that site again.

All delivery charges are subject to VAT. If you order from outside the EU, then you also pay VAT on the cost of the delivery as well as the item you bought, which is a bloody joke.

Isn't that what just happened, and I'm in the EU?

was that game new,or from a private seller from amazon?,if it was a private seller, then yes their costs can vary, but you dont have to buy it from amazon, nobody is giving you pressure to buy it,you can cancel buy going back to the home page and emptying the basket, but considering if that was sold by amazon itself,i found that an ok price what you got there, amazon are not the cheapest with their postage and packageing, pays to shop around.

It was amazon themselves, who no doubt pay a flat rate to Royal Mail.

Of course I didn't go ahead with it, over £6 P&P I'd have to be out of my mind.

always wondered about royal mail, they get alot of grumbleing from irish people when it comes to magazine subscriptions, for example,a years subscription with a certain magazine seems to cost more than buying the issues in the local shop itself!

No, you ordered within the EU, Amazon just break down the charges to show you the ex-VAT price. If you buy something, that's shipped from outside the EU, when it arrives and you get billed for customs and VAT, and the VAT is added onto the postal charge too. VAT is applied to services as well as goods.

There's nothing wrong here. Amazon are just breaking down all the charges. Most places probably don't detail the invoice as much.

£6 delivery on a £3 item is a bit of a joke though, unless it's actually worth the £8 in the first place. £6 is also far too much for delivering a DVD or game from the UK to Ireland.

Amazon work out all right if you get a lot of stuff. For one DVD or game it can be expensive.

I got a total of six top blu-ray movies + the band of brothers 6 disc Blu-ray tin + PS3 Singstar with Ps3 microphones delivered for £7.71. It came in a big box 18"x12"x5" and was delivered by an post (inc. tracking).

    Item(s) Subtotal: £147.10
    Postage & Packing: £7.71
    Total before VAT: £128.47
    VAT: £32.53
    Total: £155.45
    Promotion Applied: -£31.89
    Total for this Delivery: £155.45

They do not add on the VAT to original price, they take it off and thn add it. The promotion discount shown is 3 for 2 on the BD movies

    Boo
