    Hey guys,

used to be huge into GW and other games systems but somewhere along the way life took over. I'd like to get back into painting but it's been a good while since i paid any attention to shops, stock, paints etc!

So, where is a good place to go and some good water based paints to get back into the painting side of things!

I would be looking for stores in Dublin.

I don't need massive sets, just basic colours as my mixing skills are still up to date.

The GW shops and Models Inc stock the citadel range. The model shop on Capel street stock the Vallejo range, which looks pretty wide. I've only started using some of the vallejo range and find it had to get the consistancy right, it's either too thick or way too thin :/ Perhaps it's just the colour I'm using. (mainly red)

If you just want paint then some of the artist shops have a good range, there's one on Camden street I can't remember the name of, I found they have a good range of paints and inks. There's another one I've heard recommended on Mary's abbey (its on the luas line between the Jervis and Four courts stops) which I also cannot remember the name of.

I think O'Sullivan Graphics is the one on Camden Street. They are very good for any sort of art supplies, not just paint.
Evans' is the name of the one in Mary's Abbey.

Models INC also stock the P3 paints from Privateer Press. I much prefer these to the original GW paints - better coverage because of a higher pigmentation count.

Though the Vallejo paints are also very good imo, and i find the dropper bottles handier than the normal pots everybody else seems to use.

I'm sure you can get cheaper acrylic paints in art shops if you're not painting models, or possibly even if you are. I don't know how much of a difference it really makes, I'm thoroughly mediocre and really just stick with what's been working for me - the P3 paints.

The difference is really only noticable when you start to water them down for layering and such. Otherwise I always cheaper paints for terrain and stuff like that. Even the Euro Shops sell paint which you can use for something.

Well i'll be looking to do mods and set pieces, probably around Inquisitor scale so there will be lots of shading, highlights and small details so i'll pop for the higher range of paints i think.

    Thanks guys!

Yeah! They're the ones. O'Sullivan's is pretty good for range, I got a nice xacto blade, some good brushes and a nice paint-on primer there.

Never realised they had the P3 paints, must check them out next time I'm in. Citedel got rid of the midnight blue colour :( which happens to be the main colour I'm using in my army.... half a pot left now!

Citadel's foundation paints are like painting solid pigment. They're actually pretty good... you can do in one coat what'd take you three-four otherwise. I also found it easier to highlight them, though the pigmentation is so strong they don't mix too well with basic colours. It takes a while to change them.

Don't use the foundation metallics though, they don't form a good emulsion.

Best paintbrush I have is some cheapo yellow one (Acrylic brush now) from Easons. I got a recommendation for it from one of the guys in the Blanchardstown suggested it's be better than some of the overpriced GW ones.

I've a mix of GW, vallerio paints for the most part.

I strongly recommend the new GW washes. They give some great effects once you get used to them

Do youself a favour and pick up your brushes and a palette in an art shop. Any brushes billed for use with acrylic will be cheaper than GW and as good if not better.

I found this painting guide to be very good

Kinda hard to see much but the painting looks pretty sharp.
You going to keep that paint scheme?

I doubt it. I have yet to decide what i plan on painting but will go for something relatively basic to get back into it, a squad of something and work from there.

I was hoping to start of with an Inquisitor model, love the size of those things and the detailing, went into GW and they only sell them over mail order?

What the ****? Couldn't believe it, they had NOTHING in the store except 40K and Warhammer. What they hell happened?

    You in Dublin, Dragan?

Maybe check out Models Inc on Dorset street, there's models from a lot of different manufacturers there.

The new Helldorado miniatures are particularly cool looking imo. I can't say anything about the game itself, never having played it, but the minis are beautiful. There's some nice Privateer Press minis too.

Not sure if you are still looking for paints but this chart is handy when you want to compare the brands.
