Is there any way of recovering an unsaved excel file, without paying for one of those online recovery programs? Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have periodic autosave switched on? If it was unsaved and never autosaved, its gone.

Yeah it's autosaved every 10 minutes but when i go to where it's saved it just comes up as a blank excel file

Excel automatically saves every 10 minutes to the default location of "C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp" The files are identifiable as they are saved as a number .tmp e.g. "28.tmp". This means that they look different from word or any other temporary files that are being saved there by other applications.

You might have to turn on "Show Hidden Files"

Control Panel > Folder Options. View tab. Select "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Apply.

You might also do a search for all .tmp files as it could have been saved into one of these if you lost the file due to power failure or the application unexpectedly terminated. Go to search and put in *.tmp then look for a temp file that was created at around the same time you lost yours. If you find one that looks like a match right click on it and select "open with", select excel from the list of options, with any luck you will get your data back!

I also do a search for ALL files that day, then sort in order, sometimes programs can throw out reall oddball extensions, not sure about excel though. Copy the files and rename them .xls or the "open with" as mentioned
