Looks good, hopefully this will be the catalyst for other airlines to follow suit.

Budget airline launches £99 London-Malaysia flights

    25/11/2008 - 13:17:30
    A low-fare airline today launched London-Kuala Lumpur services starting at £99 (€116) one-way.

AirAsia X will start the five-a-week flights between Stansted and the Malaysian capital in March 2009 and will use Airbus A340 aircraft which carry 286 passengers.

Company chief executive Tony Fernandes said: “This route is the realisation of a long-held ambition to open up affordable access between Malaysia and Europe for both Asean (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and European communities.

“We have an incredible route network and, at £99, the opportunity for Londoners and Europeans to explore the Asean region has never been greater.”

Stansted’s commercial and development director, Nick Barton, said: “This is not only exciting news for Stansted but a significant milestone for low-cost, long-haul air travel around the world.”

That's crazy. Add another e50 Air Asia flight from KL and you can pretty much go anywhere in SE Asia for ~150.

I'd say the actual flight would be horrible enough though.

This is amazing. Lets take Thailand as an example:

I have just priced a return flight (5 weeks apart) from London to Kuala Lumpur. Two days after arriving a return flight from KL to Bangkok.

Total cost per person inc. taxes & charges for LON > KL, KL > BKK, BKK > KL, KL > LON ?

€323 i'm very very impressed even if the economy seating might be a bit dodgey!

Air Asia are the Ryanair of Asia.

I have flow with them and it is ok for short haul but hate to use them for a long journey.

You have to pay for meals and luggage etc

Thats a super price and at least you can be reasonably confident that they are not going to go bankrupt unlike the last low cost operator Oasis Air who did the London to Hong Kong route for around 170 one way.

I'd imagine there must be more legroom on their long haul flights, theres no way you could put up with that squashing for 9-10 hours. Even when Ryanair announced they were planning on going trans-Atlantic they said the planes used would have more legroom. Apart from that who cares about paying for luggage and food when fares are as low as 116 ?

    Why? They're using airbus 340's. They're huge.

Air Asia generally have an excellent service but you do pay for all the extras.
In fact they are remarkably like Ryanair.

A couple of things to note:

KLIA-LCCT is about 1 hour outside KL on a bus (MYR8).

If you are catching a non Air Asia connection at KLIA you must transit to the main KLIA terminal on a bus (20 mins drive or so). Baggage would have to be collected as you will not be able to check-thru.

If you book your 'extras' (meals, bags, etc) in advance it is cheaper.

Air Asia fly onward to Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane for the kangaroo route.

The seating is very cramped on normal Air Asia ... am a modest 5' 4" and my knees hit the back of the next seat on Air Asia - it may be different for Air Asia X but not so sure!

    Good to hear..
I flew with oasis from Gatwick to Hong Kong for 99ukp last year.
I took the in-flight blanket from the plane with me, and shortly afterwards they went bust
I hope Air Asia do better.. Their short haul service is good in my experience.
Good to see long haul budget airlines coming on board
Now I just need one to central America :-)

I've taken a long haul flight with these guys before. It was very bareable. Seating was fine, your average ryanair seat but I don't remember there being any legroom problem, and I'm almost 6 foot.
The only thing was it was boring as hell. I knew nothing of these guys (flew from Aus - KL) and so was expecting a tv with some movies. I should have known, none of those things on Air Asia X.
Btw, KL - Brisbane (well near Brisbane) was €250.
That mean we can all head down under for €400??

Good to hear the leg room is okay. Can compensate for lack of a TV with me iPod / lappie!

Now perhaps my parents will visit me finally!!
