DCU registration charges

    Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone else has been fined by DCU for not paying their registration fee on time, 'cos its really annoying me!

Today I went up to the student fees office and found out that they're fining me €170! Why? Because I made a small mistake of paying €863 at the start of september to DCU for my registration fee, without realising that the fee had gone up this year.

Now, ok, if I was told the actual cost of the fee on, say, the bank giro form I requested from the college then, fine, my bad. But the fact was that they didn't mention the exact amount owed, just assumed that everyone should have known about the hike. If they expect us to pay more money to them, the least they could have done was tell us how much they were looking for.

The fact remains that, in september, I paid €75 less than I should have - now they want me to pay €170 ON TOP of that! How can this be justified?

As well as this, they've also stopped me from accessing my portal pages, moodle, and all DCU computers. They did this just yesterday, after a letter came to my home address in MAYO informing me of their plans on that SAME DAY - thanks for the notice guys?

Anyways, Im just wondering if other people are experiencing the same problem. I really think this is unfair - what gives them the right to charge us these fines anyway? And where does this extra cash go - drinks for the Christmas Party?

I'd really like to know what other people think...

That seems very harsh and just seems like a simple misunderstanding. I'm sure you've already explained the situation to the student fees office, so your next port of call should probably be your class rep (not sure if they'll be able to help) and the SU. Removing your access from Moodle and the DCU computers is very unethical aswell, particularly with assignments etc due in in December.

Best of luck with it anyway.

The same thing happened to me, and i went to the fees office about a month ago, and they told me i needed to pay the late fee.

I basically told them it was their fault, and the amount due said E863, which is what i paid, and that i would not be paying the late fee, and my name was unblocked there and then

Yep this. I love to know how they came up with the arbitrary figure of 170

Have you tried dropping into the Students Union or anything to see if they know any more about it? There could be some sort of loophole that you could wriggle out of it through...
