Alternative option on Sky+ HD boxes

There's a deal going on UK Sky+ HD boxes in Tesco. Contract-free boxes with 2 months of free service before you opt to go ftv or into a package with Sky. New customers only. £199.

Now there's nothing to stop you just buying the box to replace your current Irish box and just get Sky to match your card with the new box. You can opt to bump up to a HD package too, but there's no obligation.

Advantages over a regular upgrade from Sky?

    1. Potential to pick a specific box off the shelf - people have got Pace, Samsung(?), and Amstrad boxes so far - the manufacturer is indicated on the packaging, so you might be able to make an informed purchase - as opposed to the lottery if a Sky installer brings it around.

    2. You don't have to wait 9 weeks.

    3. You don't have to hand over 50 eurons for 'installation'

Stock seems to be generally low at the moment, but new deliveries seemingly expected this week.

I've a dying Sky+ box - already swapped out the hard disk a year or two ago, and this could be a sensible replacement. Considering grabbing one up north before xmas - even though the sittingroom telly isn't HD yet, and probably won't be for a while yet..

Hmm - yep - that seems to be my problem - so no need to get a HD box after all.

So I could replace my current Sky+ box with a HD box, without taking out the HD subscription, and no difference in service?

Hopefully they will eventually do away with the €15 HD fee like they did with the recording fee.

Yup, HD box will just work as a standard Sky+ (though you should still be able to receive BBC HD and Luxe HD without paying the €15 HD fee)

I do look forward to a day where they might drop the HD fee, when they do I'll be upgrading.
