    Hey all

Just wondering if you go sick in work do the need a medical reason because my doctor says people giving reasons on sick notes is kind of an Irish thing and are not required by law to give a medical reason and they cant demand one either?

    Is this true ?

    Thanks for reading.

If it's something embarrassing then your GP can write a generic sicknote, omitting the reason for your illness.

Some seem to have a policy of not writing what is wrong with you, instead putting "eth0_ is not fit to return to work until 27/11/08 due to illness" or similar.

your employer may not need to know what ailment you have , but if you work with food then he may require you to get a cert to say that you are fit to return to work,

They may not be able to force you to give them a reason for your absense, but if you're taking a lot of sick days I think it would be in your interest to do so.

    From Citizens Information:

In some circumstances, where an employee has consistently been absent from work (or if through illness is no longer capable of continuing work), employment may be terminated.
