Price Alert! Dont buy apple in Republic

Am planning on buying an iMac.

Probable the 24 inch model, base model of this will do me.

Price in republic online apple store or in any of the resellers i.e. PC world or 3G is 1599 euro.

Same computer in UK apple online (after conversion to euro) is 1360 euro!

    240 euro difference!

And it is available at this same price from one of the UK resellers including PC world and Currys, both of which have outlets just over the border, approx 90min or less from Dublin!

Unbelievable! And similar discounts on other items.

I was planning on getting it here however now intend to purchase in Newry on my next shopping trip (to buy nappies and SMA and baby clothes which on another point are all approx 50% cheaper!).

Stop the rip off by voting with your feet people and get up north to avoid the rip off!

No point in complaining with our mouths, complain with your wallets and your feet!

Also, off topic, did anyone else notice the small print that says that all electronic software downloads in the EU are charged at the VAT rate of the country they originate from, so regardless of where you live in EU you have to pay the Irish VAT rate of 21%!!!

If the software originates in the UK, and you pay the rate of Vat from the country of origination, you wouldn't be paying 21.5%

    Apologies

yep that would be correct. As you are ordering it from Ireland you pay the Irish VAT rate. Nearly sure amazon.co.uk charge Irish VAT for orders from here.

Will the Apple store in Belfast give the education discount for a southern student?

Good question, but I'd be doubtful.

think so but it would be worth giving them a call to find out. Friday could be the day to buy, looks like there is going to be a one day sale...

Interesting, have they had these before in Ireland?

Not sure. But more than likely inspired by the "Black Friday" sales in the states. Apple are having a big one day sale on friday in US also.

Yeah, it's a massive thing over there.
In previous years they've had $100 off macbooks, it varies though.
Might be worthless to me if it isn't cheaper than the educational price.

just with regards to the person inquiring about getting a educational discount in the Apple store in Belfast. I bought stuff in the apple store in the US and I got the educational discount with an Irish student card.

I'd say they'll give you the discount anyway.

    Good luck:)

It just shows you that you don't always get better deals online.

Doing the math for the 2.4 GHz MB ordered from the Irish store vs the UK store:

    IE: €1499 incl. VAT 21%

UK: £1149 (€1370) incl. VAT 17.5% convert to 21% = €1411 that's with market exchange rate and you'd probably get hit with a delivery charge from the UK so the price would essentially be the same. Amazon do the same local VAT add-on.

So the trick is as pointed out above is to go to a bricks and mortar shop up north and pick one up saving about €120 (~€155 come Monday).

€120?? It's a saving, but when you take in travel expenses etc, sure it's not that much in the end really.

Well, if you live near the border, then it's definitely worth it.

Use the €120 to fund your B&B ;)

Well the IE Apple store is currently down, interesting to see what discounts they're going to offer. I resisted buying one previously but I can't wait any longer for a new notebook so fingers crossed.

Edit: Meh to the discount, nothing on MBP.

I would suggest that you may want to start a new thread, as it will get more exposure and more people may answer in it.

It would also help if you gave people a bit more information:

    - What is your budget more or less?
    - Would you consider 2nd hand systems?
    - What age are the kids?
    - What use would they hope to get out of the system?

That should give people what they need to make useful suggestions. Without knowing that, I'd suggest you take a look at Apple's Factory Refurbished store - there are some great deals there from time to time, though they still may be outside your budget:

The available products change every week...

    Just got an iMac 24"!

Got it in PC world up north.

Saving to me? 250 euro! Unbelievable!

Plus although it was Saturday, they gave the VAT discount!

BTW found some backroads to bypass the 10 mile tailback in: 10 min! Win win!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭kevteljeur

That's a good buy, but it's not a rip-off in the South, that's an exchange rate advantage which favours generally wealthier Southern Irish residents buying up North. Sorry to be pedantic, but I have to point that out.

    Being pedantic?

Sorry your just being incorrect actually.

The favorable exchange rate has conferred additional savings on the euro punter from the south.

However even with the old exchange rates, I would have saved still 150 euro. Thus it IS a rip off.

In fairness to what he said, he is right. The exchange can fluctuate over some months and at the minute, it goes towards buying goods in the UK and the USA. When the € came in, there wasn't close to the buying power against Sterling and British people loaded up with gifts when abroad as many of us are doing now.

I bought a 24 inch iMac a few weeks back from the refurb store. When I worked it out I saved over 800 euro. Apple gave me a better system than I had actually ordered. Maybe it's because of all the stuff I've bought from them over the years !

Worth getting software from the UK too.

Just ordered Photoshop CS4 Extended student ed. on amazon.co.uk for £154 GBP which is around 170 EUR + free shipping to a relative in the UK (saving around £5).
On Adobe store it would've been 215 EUR inc shipping and studentsoftware.ie it would've cost 216 EUR inc VAT and shipping. So I reckon I saved around 40 EUR.

Even apple store uk is a fair bit cheaper. Wonder do they ship to Ireland or are you bumped to the IRL site?

just bought the 24 inch led display today in apple store in belfast. with the student discount it worked out at roughly 600 euro. A saving of 250 euro compared to apple online store in ireland.

you would save about €300 on a midrange macbook purchased in the UK at today's rates. That is 20% cheaper than here.

I think this was mentioned here before, but did you have an Irish student card or must it be N/Irish????

    Also, what's the display like??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭ant043

Irish student card. They had no problem with that. Display is absolutely beautiful. Apple really did put a high quality panel on it. It's actually the cheapest led display on the marketplace and is well worth the price. It charges the notebook unlike other displays and the sound quality from it is very good. The ability to convert the pro into a desktop when you get home is brilliant. Any questions feel free to ask.
