How to plan training?

    Hi Folks,

Im signed up for the edinburgh marathon on may 31st, and would like to also do a couple of sprint triathlons and an olympic distance one next year. I'm not quite sure what the best approach to training for this is though. Im aiming to do the first sprint to get an idea of what the setup with a triathlon is like, the second one to see how well I can do, the marathon to either (1) improve my dublin marathon time or (2) simply run without walking if one of my friends signs up for it (in which case i dont have a time goal. i briefly walked during the dublin marathon and feel as if i cheated now!), and the olympic distance tri to see how well i can do at that distance assuming I can get my swimming up to standard.

Should I get my fitness for each of swim/bike/run high before the season begins and then target events with no overlap between their training, or can I integrate the first sprint tri (with no aim of 'racing' it) during the marathon training before I hit the marathon taper (using bike/swim as cross training), and then begin a fresh plan after recovering from the marathon to do the olympic distance one and use a second sprint as part of the training for this?

Or should I simply forget using a couple of sprint triathlons for experience (if theyre likely to mess with training plans) and aim straight for an olympic later in the season after the marathon?

    Hi kingquez,

Focus on the Marathon first if you want to run the whole thing. You already have that as a goal so maybe set it as your A goal. The triathlons are generally during the summer so pick an olympic one as a secondary target in late July maybe and set it as a B goal. That will give you 5-6 weeks to prepare for that given a week off after your marathon

You will have a really good aerobic base from the running so you will have plenty of fitness for the triathlons. If you are doing 6 sessions a week between now and the marathon, you could make 4 runs and then a swim and bike session or 2 swim sessions.

Most importantly, target your A, B and C goals for the year and everything you do is geared towards them in that order. A being the one that means most to you etc...

BTW I decided to start Triathlons too next year. I had 2 swims and 4 runs a week in the lead up to Dublin. Now I have 3 swims, 2 runs and a bike session and I feel if there was a sprint tri on this weekend I could handle it (as long as the swim was in the pool;)).

Also, no harm in using the first sprint of the season as a cross training session. You could begin your marathon taper feeling good after it :D
