Travelling to London this week via Stansted and wondering about my options to get into the city. See that Stansted Express online is £26. Is it cheaper to buy the tickets on the plane or are there alternatives????

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah it's cheaper on the plane alright :) I think it's about £19 return...can't remember.

The Stanstead express is the best option, direct to Liverpool street. From there you can get tube or mainline rail services. Check out the journey planner on tfl :)

Here are some other options (scroll down for a table comparing them all):

I find the Stanstead express more convenient than the National Express coaches. It all depends on traffic though. Traffic could be brilliant and there could be a delay on the rail lines, or the rail lines might be clear and the M11 could be closed due to a pile-up... it's best to have a couple of options lined up.

It also depends on what time your flight lands. The buses run longer than the trains iirc so if you're landing late at night and your plane gets delayed you may have to get a bus.

Although the bus seems like a cheaper option, if time is an issue then just pay the money for the train. The bus takes forever and a day to get in and out, whereas the train is almost always on-time*. Got it last week and was in stansted in 42mins from Liverpool St. The bus a few weeks before took over 2hours.

*I take no responsibility for delays

It also depends where your final destination in London is. For some, the bus may be a more convenient alternative.

    Thanks for all your replies!

I guess the usual applies when dealing with a Ryanair airport!

When you add in the transfer cost to the centre of the city, it could be dearer than the so called more expensive airports!!!

    But that's another debate!!

For the record the price of a return Stansted Express ticket bought from Ryanair is £20

Just back this weekend and the published return on the Stansted Express is £26 but Ryanair sell them for £22.

    Thanks again for your help!

That's very good. You can buy the tickets online and collect them from the machine on the platform, but i don't think they are as cheap as that.

WRT which mode of transport, it depends a bit on where and when you are going (As has already been said).

The last time I went to Wembley, I caught the easybus to Baker Street which took about 90 minutes but it was only about £6 and I had plenty of time. Liverpool street is pretty good though and i think there are three tube lines there as well. It is also only a five minute or so walk from there to Bank Station or Moorgate which gives you even more possibilities.

That doesn't really apply to London as all the airports cost about the same to get into the centre of the city. Heathrow is the cheapest as you can go by tube, but that takes ages, or there is the Heathrow connect which costs about £8 return off peak. it is worth checking BMI and Aer Lingus, because their flights aren't usually that much more than Ryanair and flying with them to Heathrow is much nicer than flying Ryanair to Stansted.
