    hi,
I'd really appreciate some help before I go insane. Recently got a samsung vr350m dvd/video freeview box off ebay. Currently renting in Dundalk in apartment block with ok tv reception (can be fuzzy on rainy days but otherwise pretty clear).
Problem is I can only pick up the blank screens and sound of rte 1/2 and tv3 through freeview. This I assume is down to mp4 which is fine, don't want them anyway. I am looking to get the other freeview channels and wondering if there would be any suggestions? Can't really replace the aerial due to renting.

    Cheers in advance

Sounds as if signal from NI is not strong enough. If all you're getting is blank screens rather than break up and intermittent pictures probably a set back booster (one that plugs into aerial at back of your set) will be of little or no benefit and a masthead amplifiier (one near the aerial) is required. Might be good to ask in one of the TV shops in Dundalk about Freeview reception in the town and how good/bad/indifferent it is at present. If that doesn't get you anywhere look in the local phone book under 'Aerial manufacturers and Suppliers' and ask someone in the know and they may be able to help. Freeview reception particularly from a distance can be iffy at best of times as signals are on lower power than analogue. Even where I live in NI just 15 miles from Divis transmitter I lose one of the Freeview multilpexes altogether in the late spring/summer due to tree foliage and one of the other multiplexes is on the 'cliff edge' as they call it until mid-late autumn. This is with a 27 element Televes aerial well mounted on the chimney!

    Thanks very much!

I tried the box in my mum's house 2 miles further south and managed to get a few muxs. I'm considering (seeing as the flat's so old and therefore the aerial probably is a bit too) buying a wideband aerial with masthead amp and either sticking it in the window 3 floors up or in the attic.

Excellent idea. Wideband will probably bring in the multiplex for Sky News/Sky Sports News/Sky 3 and masthead amp should make a considerable difference to signal. Best of luck!
