How often are they changed, out of curiosity?

I just got the 3rd edition CD, only realised it was out about 3 days ago.

I have my theory test on the 17th of December and Im wondering would there be any chance of it being updated AGAIN??!!

Also, should I get the book aswell?
Oh god, Im starting to freak out a bit now.
I'm in college now, and I ave exams in 2 weeks, and then I have the test the week after.

Do ye think I would hve enough time to get it together?!

    Hi,

You will be fine with the 3rd edition, this is the latest version and only out a few weeks (maybe months at this stage!).

The 2nd edition was published in 2006 and had significant changes between it and the 1st edition. However, the changes to the 3rd edition are relatively minor (assuming you are referring to Cat B) and mainly relate to updates regarding the Provisional License V's Learner Permit changes which came into force since the 2nd edition was published. I dont expect there will be a 4th edition anytime soon.

One thing to note about the CD is it is possible to work through the full list of questions - some people assume that you can only do the 'mock test' with it. After you select the 'Car Theory Test' you have a option to either 'Take a Theory Test' which is the mock test of 40 questions or you can select 'Preperation for theory test' under which you have all of the sub-sections and you get to go through all of the questions and check your answers. Probably best to do the preparation part first and then start on the mock tests, once you are consistently getting above 35 you are ready for it!

Good luck with it, and remember if you dont know the answer the one that seems the safest option is usually the best bet!

    Declan.

It also doen't help that I have 5 straight days of exams before it, but what can ya do?!

    Anyway, thanks again!

I heard it of a friend but he said it was just a rumor. I doubt its true anyway, 80 questions seems a bit much.

I will try to pick up a CD soon, i would find it easier to study from a CD than from a book.

is your test on the 17th of next month or january?? good luck in it.

    whats ''greeney-grey'' by the way??

The advice i would give is buy both Cd and book. Absolutley no harm having the pair. I worked with the cd 3 times a day minimum for about a week and would bring the book to work and have a browse through that during breaks. I felt once i was hitting 37/40 at every go i was ready. If you are just about making it to the 35 don't go for your test as it doesnt give you much room for error. I passed on my first attempt working this way. Goodluck.

On a personal note i felt it easier to concentrate on the questions without the voice over but that was just me. They will give you these options when you are just about to sit the test.

Oh ya, I never use the voice over, and I booked it without the voice aswell.

Im generally getting 35+ in the practice tests, but Im just thinking that since I have next week as reading week, and then the following week of exams, and then my test on the following Wednesday, I might lose my focus a bit.

    I may just be getting a bit over-dramatic, but I REALLY don't want to get a 34!!!

But I still have the 2nd edition book, and now I have the 3rd edition CD, do you think I would be ok with those 2?

100% no problem, that's what i used. When you you do the test on the cd at home or wherever what i did was review the 40 questions again and not just the incorrect ones. To be honest a lot of the answers to the questions are common sense but there are always the few that will catch you out so doing a reviews is very important.

Ya, I've got a laptop with me so I do the practice test and Preps as much as I can in college and at home, kind of at the expense of my study though:P

I tend to get a bit mixed up with the Garda hand signals, so that is definitely something I should gloss over, inbetween Microeconomics formulas that it:eek:

*sigh* the next 2 weeks are going to suck monkey scrotum:(

Thanks for the tips anyways Dun!!! Much appreciated!

Ha, funny you should mention the signals because thats where i struggled. Thats where the book comes in handy because you can go to that particular section where they are all together and give it a good study. Ironically after i gave the signals more of my time i don't recal getting one single question based on Garda Signals.

Hey, do ya know if the Category C test has changed much between the 2nd and 3rd edition?

Good advice about doing all the questions by the way, theres a ****load of them (on the 2nd edition CD anyway) so if ya just do practice tests, ya could get unlucky on the day and get questions that ya havent seen before. Better to do them all really!

just a follow up.....in case anyone's interested, i did the Cat. C theory test today and all the questions were exactly as they are on the 2nd edition practice CD.

I'd like to add that I've giving the book and cd to the library so if your in co. Kildare you could pick it up, both are 3rd edition.

I just bought the third edition and I have found a mistake on page 71 and 72. The same question is asked on both questions but with different answers. Could anyone shed some light on this matter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 757 ✭✭✭DriveSkill

I dont have a copy of the 3rd edition so cant check directly but its possible both answers are correct - as long its not the same 4 options but with different 'correct' answers!

What is the question and what are the 2 correct answers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,462 ✭✭✭Orla K

I noticed that too, so I thought I would email it to them I had also done the test and got a question that wasnt in the book. They sent me back an email saying that they had checked it and all the questions that were on the test were in the book and said nothing about the misprints. I mailed them back saying that if they had checked the 3rd edition then they would see that one question was missing and there was a misprint. Someone else emailed me back and said 'they were aware of this'. That's just about all the info I got.
Also if you want to know the question it's one of the speed in a head on collision 80km/h I think

No the same question can't possibly have the same answers in this paticular question.
There is a guy on a bicycle on both questions, and he is on the same position of the road on both accounts, there is two lines. One is broken and the other is continous.
On both questions the questions is as follows:
You wish to overtake the cyclist you may......
One answer is cross the broken line only.
The next page asks the same question but the answer is complete opposite.
Overtake only if you do not cross any of the lines and
not cross the continous white line.
I would like to add the continous white line is closer to the vehicle than the broken line, making less sense.

I believe the problem here is the picture is incorrect for the first question in the 3rd edition. Not actually sure how this would have happened as its correct in the 2nd Edition of the book!!

So, first question should show cyclist on the left with a broken line closest to him and then a continuous white line. (I believe in your version the continuous white line is closest to the cyclist)

Correct answer in that case is : You can cross the broken line

Second variation on the question has the same cyclist but the lines are swapped so now continuous white line closest to the cyclist and broken line outside it (this should be the picture you have).

Correct answer here (in 2 parts ) :
    1. Overtake only if you do not cross any of the lines
    2. Not cross the continuous white line.

Hi, Ive recently gotten a present of a car and have began studying for my theory over the past 5 days.....i seem to be consistantly gettin 33-36 but never over. Am I safe to book the test yet? This will be my 2nd time doing so:o, as the first time was directly after my leaving cert last summer (studying was the last thing i needed lol), and I REALLY dont want to fail!!!!

Also, I have been practicing with the 2nd edition cd and book, will this be okay???:)

If you are never getting over 36 then I think you need to study some more - there is very little margin for error there and in the actual test you will be under more pressure/stress.

Best thing is to concentrate on the book first and then do the practice tests on the CD. Try and understand the questions rather than learning them off - you wont be able to learn off by heart all of the questions (exception maybe being the road signs). However, if you understand the questions and why the given answer is correct then you will be able to figure it out in the actual test.

BTW you should be fine with the 2nd Edition, very minor changes in the 3rd for Cat B - most to do with referring now to 'Learner Permit' rather than 'provisional licence' etc.

    Best of luck with it,

    Declan.

The 2nd edition is fine, the only thing different about the 3rd is on licences other than the normal. Also my brother passed his with 1 week of study, 39/40. He only had the book. The best thing to do as well as study, is glance through the book for about an hour just before the test. I did this and bet my brothers score, and rang him straight away, of course it wasn't to gloat :p

    :DNicely done

Thanks, thats puts my mind at ease. Two weeks sounds like plenty of time so. Hopefully I can match your score;)
