Does anyone know when they start advertising these jobs? Also I'm 20 with practically no work experience (just babysitting , a few weeks in a shop during school) , I'll be graduating in May and I'd like to get some work over the summer to save for moving out into the big world:( Anyone what would my chances be of getting a summer job with the civil service with little experience?

In this climate, i would be thinking unlike, as there is a recruitment freeze for the next 18 months :(

I would think it's more about who you know. If you have any connections, use them and they might get you in. Otherwise I think chances are much slimmer than the past

Temporary summer recruitment into the civil service over the summer is, for the majority of departments, handled centrally by the Public Appointments Service. They use an open and fair system of recruitment, so the assumption that "its more about who you know" is a bit of an outdated assumption to be honest.

Vacancies arise due to Civil Servants taking unpaid leave over the summer months. With the 3% payroll cut, I would guess that most departments will considerably reduce the amount of Temporary Clerical Officers they recruit next year... But keep an eye out on publicjobs.ie. You can also register there and they will email you when vacancies arise.

Well it's not from my experience. I was giving waghag a route that they might find success with as many summer students i know have. Not saying it's the only way they can get a summer job in civil service but worth a shot if they do have that opportunity

You can also look at revenue.ie as they recruit tcos also usually in march. It's an open fair competition with An online application and a interview.Don't know what Flynn is on about! Also there is no freeze on yet either. Some people here should check there info before posting

Expect a definite drop in the number of positions becoming available during the summer, as there will be a definite drop in the number of people being granted term time.

at a recent internal meeting in my Department we were informed that staff taking term time next summer would not be replaced by any TCOs. So we aren't expecting any positions next yr.

If jobs are being advertised they will appear on publicjobs.ie. You will need an account and to fill out a questionnaire. If they like your answers you may be called for an interview.

Personal contacts will not be able to put a case forward for you.

not all summer / temp positions are advertised online - some in offices around the country are advertised locally - eg in Athlone Dept. of Education advertises in locally only - it happens every 2 years there as a panel is created after application and interview process. "knowing someone" will not help. Probably common enough in other area's of the country also.

Some positions are advertised on the general recruitment website www.publicjobs.ie when they are looking for multiple locations etc.

there are going to be less temps recruited this year all over the civil/public service but cant see that happening in all areas such as where there is real seasonal demand (eg passport office gets busier in summer and usually beefs up the staff levels to cover this period)

basically if you are interested call a nearby dept. ask them if anything is going to be available and also register on the web site - good luck :)

When would these positions be filled or advertised? If there will be any....

I doubt there will be any temp staff taken on this year. We had a meeting in my department and we were told that there was no temp staff been taken on and that we would have to take up the slack for any staff that are on term time. The only dept that MIGHT take on staff would be Social Welfare.
