Can I negotiate with Recruiter?

    I work in the clerical sector as a secretary. A recruter got me a position with a company and because I had been unemployed for so long I took it, quite happily for €13 an hour.

    Thing is, invoice just came in and last week they made just over €150 on me. That was for a four day weeek. Im a bit annoyed that the fact Im driving from Kildare to the other side of Dublin, for €13 an hour, and they are making over €500 a month on me. Dont get me wrong, I jumped at the job happily. I dont mind leaving two hours before the job begins, a job is better than no job.

    Has anyone ever re-negotiated their rate with a recruiter? Can I do that?

    The employer is paying recruiter €18.75 per hour. I feel like propositioning the employer that I will work for x amount less. I would gladly work for 14.55 an hour if it meant I was full time.

    Sorry if Ive come off a little whiney but its hard when X of your wage gets pissed on petrol just getting to a job and they're making a hell of a lot of money out of me.

    a quick calculation suggests the recruiter cost per hour for you is c €15.91, a profit of €2.84 an hour

    You get paid weekly probably in arrears, they get paid probably worse than invoice date + 30 days.

    Not saying this isn't a good margin, but they are far from screwing anyone (ensuing debate re recruiters value for money etc etc)

    BUT to answer your question you could negotiate but if I were you I just be wary that you are certainly not the only person looking for a job at the moment and the company may want a recruter supplied temp for a variety of reasons (e.g. headcounts), so be wary

    It wouldn't work - the employer can't get you behind the agency's back as most likely they have a contract in place and the employer can only get you directly if they "buy you out" from the agency. It happens quite often if the employee is good enough but here there is not much chance of them doing it, as somebody said if they are hiring temps they do it for a reason.

    You can always try negotiating with the recruiter it won't hurt to ask but I'd be surprised if they did it unless you are a truly exceptional employee they'd pay more to keep on their books.

    Full time permanent employees are entitled to sick pay, holidays and all the other benefits, not to mention that their payroll, performance management, HR support would all then be switched to being done by the company. It doesn't sound like alot but all added up would probably add up to a good bit more more than a couple of euro an hour. If it wasn't economical for companies to take on temps they wouldn't do it!

    I hate to break it to you, but that kind of margin for a recruiter is small. You're doing well.

    In the current labour market, sit tight, but look for a better job when things ease up again.

    You can try negotiating with the recruiter, but it helps if their client really loves you first. You're too new for that to have happened yet. Right now, they'll just get someone else in for the same as you're getting, or maybe less.
