ebay will throw the book at you for ending an auction early to sell to someone else

I didn't end it early. It completed and I knew he was local beforehand. He said could he collect it - I said yes.

I thought he was going to pay via paypal though and then collect it!

What is the problem? Paypal is only what Ebay wants people to pay with but all that is required is that you get paid and then that is that. Only thing I could see from your side would be to send a final bill with zero freight (was a while since I was doing sales on Ebay though).

Calm down lad. I should have made myself more clear.

My auction is ended but the payment part is not cleared up on ebay's site!

EDIT - Just realized I can mark it as payment received. That clears it all up then. My mistake.

Not sure how u can solve this with eBay - but if you got paid through PayPal and he collected it, you have no seller protection or anything. he could claim you never posted it (through PayPals buyer protection) and you wouldnt be able to prove you did, because you gave it to him by hand, and would automatically lose the claim. Don't allow anyone to pay through PayPal & then pick up the item because you are open to fraud then.

hmmm what about paying by cash on collection. I suppose they could still launch a claim couldn't they?

Maybe, but I wouldn't worry too much. Since no cash touched ebay/paypal there is really no claims AFAIK. i.e. if he paid via paypal he can claim money back through them. This is more like a buyandsell transaction. Also you now save on the ~4% paypal fee.

You aren't meeting him outside his palace in Nigeria are you ;)

There is NO seller protection in Ireland. If you accept a Paypal payment here you are wide open to fraud no matter what you do. Proof of delivery means nothing here. You automatically loose any simple INR Paypal claim.

What you say is good advice anyway, but more relevant to the countries covered by "seller protection", UK USA and Canada. However no matter where you are you are always open to the chargeback scam as Paypal do not fight these claims. They just take the money back out of your account and if it's not there you will owe it to them.

i think there is a common scam in Britain where people pay via paypal turn up to collect it then say that they never got it or their paypal account was hacked into.

If you are getting payed by paypal could you get him to sign something to prove he got it?
