    Hi all, new poster.

Put a request in the Bargain alerts forum and was told to come here!!

Complete and utter novice at this but would love to get into it.

Budget is about €500. Would love an absolute rocket of a car or a basic helicopter so I can then move onto bigger ones!!

Saw a few nice ones a while back in the model shop in Waterford but now I have the time to get around to buying one I need the experts around here to give me some advice!! ;)

Nitrotek again ..... sigh .... I suggest you do a search for what other peoples experienced after they got one.
A general principle of models, if it's cheap, what's inside is cheap, and it goes, and doesn't go, accordingly .......
We all have a minimum quality we don't go below unless we like playing with disassembled parts more than using it.

Buddy of mine selling an FG Marder ( Buggy)
    And an FG Beetle
Both are 5th scale as you showed in the link but are serious pieces of machinery. Not like the rubbish Nitro-Tek sell.

Both run on 2 stroke petrol so no messin with tuning and overheating etc..

Let me know if youy want more details ;)

Also have a look at the Traxxas Summit (just released), the Revo and E-Revo, tried-n-trusted Savage X 4.6 and Losi LST2.

Ask yourself whether you want electric, nitro or gas, buggy, crawler or MT, 1/10th scale or bigger, kit or RTR, etc.

    And beware the hop-up bug!!!

what do you think? if it was you going to buy something what would you go for electric, nitro or gas? if you had €300 - €500 in the morning what machine would you go for!!

kinda like the traxxas t-max 3.3 its pretty hard to find somebody thou selling them. they seem like a crazy machine.

They have their advantages and disadvantages.

Nitro has a real engine and uses real fuel. They are hard to keep running and require alot of work. You will spend alot of time working on the engine instead of driving (especially at the beginning).

Electric is cleaner and less hassle but there is no noise and smoke like in Nitro.

Whichever you choose there is a large amount of knowledge that can be gained on either technology and requires at least a little commitment otherwise you will have a frigged Nitro engine or damaged batteries.

Just my 2 cent. I'm relatively new to the hobby.

I've got a Hong Nor X1 CRT truggy which is known as a very good truggy (nitro) should you want to go down the truggy route. I bought the ready to race (RTR) which includes remote controller and an already setup truggy. TBH I think the setup out of the box was not great and I'm changing it at the moment but that's not to say it wouldn't suit you - at least in the beginning.

My choice would be a Dark Impact
    http://www.greenhobbymodel.com/tamiya_dark_impact.htm
First reasons that come to mind:
1 Electric ... always starts no delay
2 Electric ... not covered in slime
3 Electric ... the fuel comes from my mains, no nitro to store & carry along
4 Sophisticated suspension .... outperforms other more expensive models
5 Can take a cheap motor for now, and a hotter motor later with simple changeover
6 A buggy ... faster than monster trucks
7 It's a kit ... there is a lot of extra fun in the making of it that the pre-mades lack.

It is only now I noticed you are from Waterford.
I am in Neighbouring county Cork
    So,
    From that point,
Why not buy something you could come and run on our track?

We are setting up an outdoor Offroad track this year for 1/10 scale electric.

Could I suggest An Associated B4 Buggy?
    Team Associated B4 buggy
    Full race spec machine
    Not a toy
    Electric
2wd (as far as I know there are no tracks racing 4wd yet)
Run a brushless system with a 10.5 turn motor and it will be 100% fast enough for you.

    Lipo batteries.
    No hassle with them
Basically it would be plug and play.
I know you would not have the sound of Nitro but
Believe me when I tel you after a week or so you will ask yourself why did you buy nitro in the first place. it will wreck your head trying to get those things in tune.
    I know.
I have been there several times and gave up eventually.
    alternatively
If you want to go Petrol 1/5 scale
    I have a buddy selling a couple
    one buggy
    and one beetle
I am sure he wouldnt mind goinmg to you with them if you were someway interested?
I wouldnt want to see him go on a wild goose chase.

But petrol is way better than Nitro
Longer runtimes ( 40 mins to the tank)
    Petrol getting cheaper
    petrol
    under 5€ a gallon
    Nitro €20 to €40 a gallon

I had one of those 3.3 engines
The thing blew up after 12 or so tanks of fuel
I sent it back and got it rebuilt
    Sold it without running it
as far as I am aware that engine blew up in no time again
Nitro is a no-no unless you have experience or someone experienced with you while learning about it :(
    Let me know.;)

Well, I'd build my own extended chassis custom Savage, slap a monster engine in it and equip it with high-end digital servos to go with the new Spektrum dx3s. Might have to step it down slightly to fit within the €500 budget though...:D

If you like mechanical stuff, I'd suggest a Savage X kit. Savages are renowned for their toughness and durability, and parts are cheap enough off eBay.

    Alternatively, I'd like a brushless e-Revo...:D

The nice thing about monster trucks is that you can run them nearly anywhere, whereas with a buggy you'll be restricted.

One thing is certain though, performance don't come cheap! On the electric side specifically, watch out for the "hidden" costs associated with the modern high performance brushless systems - you could easily spend just as much on lipo batteries, charger, balancer, etc. as on the model itself.

And as with most all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Lastly, and not to shoot myself in the foot here, but the T-Maxx really is a dated platform and old-school compared to what's available nowadays.

    Well
He would have 2 decent Lipo packs and charger/balancer for the price of 5 or 6 gallons of decent nitro. ;)

    Decent brushless system = between 150 - 200 €

    Buggy
    new or S/H
Can be bought for under 200

As far as I know this is the one he is selling >> FG Marder <<
I think €400 would buy it RTR
