Thumper, does the Apple Pro Speakers feed off with a mini jack connector? ie the same as is on a headphone? If so, would an usb external soundcard do?

It uses a proprietary connector called an Apple Speaker MiniJack, the only macs I ever saw them on were the G4 iMacs and PowerMacs, is a digital output and speaker connector has a sleeve at the top that provides power to the speakers, like the apple ADC connector did for monitors.

as an alternative to the iFire - the PowerWave (also by griffin) will also do the trick for you. It's a USB audio card but it has a built in amp which, i believe, will happily power the pro speakers.

it looks like there are also problems laying paws on this.

I remember these gadgets. I had an iMic which at the time I could not live without. I hope you manage to get your hands on an iFire.

I see them regularly for around US$100 on eBay. Sometimes they go for as much as $200-$250!
