If it's broken then bring it to a recycling centre.

If it's working, give it to me!

Sell it or give it to pc world. They might recycle it or you can get them to upgrade the graphics card, cpu, etc.

If it works there's a charity that takes them, wipes all the data on it, and gives them to children in Africa or to charities that operate in Africa.

Really? i tought the black bin was anything that couldn't be recycled or organic.
did you buy a new lap top? you bring your old lap top back to the store you bought your new one from.. it's covered by weee

No its not working, and even when it was it was a pile or crap, so there would be no use trying to use parts of it or whatever. The screen was ****ed too. I can't bring it to a recycling centre, its too far away. Can I not just chuck it in the bin, sure no one would notice would they? Or perhaps I could go to a rough area of town and leave it sitting somewhere, and some poor knacker will knick it and bring it home.

If you have an old car you want to dump too then just leave the laptop on the front seat and leave them outside your house. Simple yet effective.

    Did you remove the RAM?
    You could recycle that.

Remove the HDD, strike it with an ark welder to destroy the data electronically, then physically smash it to pieces with a lump hammer. You don't want to be giving your personal life away to the authorities.

strike it with an ark welder

Don't be so silly. The ark was made completely of wood, not metal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭tony1kenobi

Burn it. In case somebody wipes it and gives it to a hungry kid in Africa.

The data could still be recovered if the internal platters aren't damaged too badly. A more effective method is shred in linux. Overwrites the disk 25 times with random data.

    Collection
Since the introduction of the WEEE Regulations 2005 Consumers can bring their unwanted electrical and electronic equipment to their local Civic Amenity centres for recycling free of charge.

The WEEE Ireland map gives details of Civic Amenity centres nationwide with WEEE collection facilities.

In addition Consumers can bring back WEEE within 15 days to Retailers when they purchase new equipment on a like for like basis.

Retailers are also obliged to collect WEEE within 15 days of delivery of a new item, provided the item is disconnected from all mains, does not pose a health and safety risk and is readily available for collection.
