    Yo.

Today at a most critical moment in my life, (with a kitesurfer directly over my head in sunny weather), my camera threw an Err99 and since then will not switch on at all.

I am not amused as I am in north eastern Brazil.

I would appreciate answers to the following questions:

    1) anyone ever have an Err99 on a 40D? Google tells me it is a catch all
    2) anyone call Canon service about this bearing in mind I am in north Eastern Brazil
    3) anyone done a hard reset of a 40D in which case where is the 3V hidden because I didn't bring the manual with me.

    Help?

Initial general advice from the interwebs seems to be

    Remove battery, clean contacts
    Remove lens, clean contacts
    Remove CF card, clean contacts
    Remove external flash, clean contacts

You do that and I'll keep looking for you?

Sorry, they wont do you any good - it needs to go back to Canon (or service agent) to fix.

I know of 12 togs in the last 2 days who have experienced the exact same issue and another 10-20 in the last 3 months who had the same problem.

    Canon's own site says:

    1. Clean the lens contacts.
    2. Remove and replace the battery.
    3. Remove the 3rd party accessory.
    4. Remove third party lens and try with Canon EF or EF-S lens.
    5. The EOS 40D must be serviced.

    1) done
    2) done
    3) was a Canon Lens at the atime
    4) was a Canon Lens at the time
    5) I think it will have to be replaced actually.

The camera is still under warranty. As a result, it will have to go to Canon Ireland before anything is done with it. Repairs in Brazil are not really an option under the circumstances.

I am guessing that the problem is a shutter failure. I think it has about 15000 actuations at this stage (since April 2008).

I am absolutely gutted. I may be able to borrow a 400D to do one project I had down here or otherwise I may buy a 400D if I can find one locally (would not bet on it to be honest). Needs to be CF so the 450D is not an option.

I remember I got this error on my 20D a few years ago as i was about to take a very important group photo, but i had changed the lens before the shot (Panic set in ) so I took off the lens and put it back on and away it went. I never again saw that error

For some it is hit and miss but it has to go to a service centre to have the shutter replaced otherwise it will happen again. A very good mate of mine in Denmark had it replaced after the initial fault code and it went within a week of the new being fitted - go figure!!

Its a conspiracy I tell ya!! :D;)

Yes I got Err99 on a 300D sometimes when using a pre digital Sigma Lens.

I'm resigned to being without a camera in Brazil for two weeks.

Please excuse me while I go and cry.

Do you use a battery grip,
My canon 20D gets the odd err99 when with battery grip,
I take it off,put battery into normal slot switch on,
then if it work re-attacth battery grip and off you go..

I recently got the same error on my 40D. Camera got wet and so that prob reason for the error at the time. Took out battery, cards and took off lens and placed the camera in the hot press for 2 days. Camera worked afterwards and haven't recived error since then...

Camera did get wet yes, but this would not be the first time that that happened. Additionally, it has weather proofing and frankly the extent to which it got wet should not make a difference. it's been out in worse rain storms.

I will call Canon Ireland later today and see what they say. Card has been taken out of the camera anyway; no hotpress to play with.

ricky - no battery grip so no easy solution there

I got the same error a couple of days before my wedding (I wont rant here I have done it to many times before) but I was able to use live view for a short while to take pictures even though it would not work the normal way. Try that you may get another few shots out of it.

If at all possible I would recommend skipping Canon Ireland and just deal with Canon UK directly, all canon Ireland do is send the camera to them anyway.

Camera won't power up at all so LiveView isn't an option either.

I get what you're saying about Canon UK. I'm in Brazil right now though so if there's an easy tech support solution I want it.

Has to go to be serviced.

    :(

Sorry to hear it has to go for a full service. Will you be able to source a replacement locally?

I would not mention in the letter you send with the camera that it got wet btw there were old threads on fredmiranda and dpreview of people saying both Canon and Nikon refused to even try fix their gear because it got wet.

Can't source a replacement locally, no.

Ring Canon USA then and you will probably not have to pay for the call usually a toll free number somewhere

They have an international toll free number but it doesn't work from the mobile networks from here.

I called Canon in Dublin this morning. The camera must go back for a service, end of story.
