    I'm a 25 y/o gay guy and I think I have anal warts! :(

I feel so ashamed and disgusted. Its making me feel a bit depressed.

I had a full STI test in Jamess in August and all was clear, how could they not pick up on this?

I have never had bareback sex and havent had any sex since my test in August so I don't understand it.

I need to get rid of them. Because I know Im still clear for everything else and I dont want to miss load's of work I dont want to go back to Jamess. Can anyone recommend some place I can go to just to get treated for the warts? I dont want to go to my GP. Thanks.

I read that the warts are caused by HPV and that 90% of men with HIV have HPV, so is there a connection between the two?

    Thanks

HPV is THE most common sti, if you have had sex the chances are that you have it.
There are several strains or types of HPV and some will devleope gentail warts of different sizes and some will not, you have have HPV and not have warts at all.

If you have warts then you need to go get them treated and you are best of letting your gp know as they could be re occuring. You will need to have them frozen off or have a prescription cream used on them.

Well, it's been three months since your last screen, so you could have picked this up since then - also, you can be carrying the HPV virus without it showing up on a test, that's why it's so prevalent in Ireland. Unfortunately, it's also one of two STIs that can be transmitted even if you use a condom every single time - the other one is herpes.

So, taking all this into account - the high prevalence, the fact that you've been recently tested, and the fact that you were as safe as you could possibly be - there is absolutely NO need for you to be ashamed about this. None whatsoever. It's the most common STI, and it's sheer bad luck that you got it.

I can completely understand you not wanting to go to St James's, or to your own GP. There's a gay men's health service in the Baggot Street area, I think this could be a good option for you - I've never been (being a girl and all), but I'm sure it's an open, non-judgemental service.

    Hope that helps!

Be careful that you dont have some really badly infected ingrown hairs!!

I thought I had wart before down there, I panicked and got some over the counter stuff but it actually turned out to be a badly infected ingorwn hair and as Ive found in the last few years, Im prone to them on the back of my thighs. Give it a squeeze, there could be a hair trapped in there and the skin has grown hard over it.

How do you know their anal warts, could just be a hemmaroid which would also be a bump/bumps on your anus.

I thought at first that they were bad hemmaroids, because I do have a history of them, although not quite as bad. But I started to think they were warts having looked at pics of them online. Going to ring up for an appointment tomorrow to get them sorted anyway.

A friend of mine had a friend (a girl) who got these after having anal sex with a guy. They burned them off somehow though. She said it wasn't pleasant but they did get rid of them. You can be a carrier for years apparently before you have the first outbreak and they can't detect them otherwise so you could have got them years ago and are only now having an outbreak of them.

Ok I am only a student nurse but here's the thing, Even if you used condoms correctly, anal warts are contractable as they are nothing to do with fluid transfer. And yes you can get them on your anus as well as the sexual organs, so yes there is a high chance you have them.

The only thing is they do require medical treatment so not wanting to go to the doctor to have them treated is not an option really! Also it takes several weeks - to several months for these warts to surface so your health screening may not have picked up on them, but they may have been there for longer than you think!

Also HPV, though dangerous to both sexes, is more of a problem for women, but you will have to get a doctor to look after your warts and if you are there about them you might as well ask about HPV too.

So I went to see a doctor about this today. He was really nice. They were warts, I had 5 apparently. He froze them off. He said it'll be uncomfortable for a few days and then will be good as new. Glad its sorted. Thanks for all your help everyone!

Hi everyone, I thought I'd update this. I've been to the clinic three times since the first post and the doctor has frozen the warts each time. I started off with 5 warts and so far I still have either 3 or 4 of them and one of them is quite big, so there hasnt ben much of an improvement :(

It's really freaking me out. Does anyone know why its taking so long to cure them or has anyone else had an experience like this? Its really getting me down now. Thanks
