If so, is there any particular process i have to go through?

Will i be placed on some sort of list of people who are deemed a threat to society because they own something bigger than a potato peeler?

    Thanks

No once your over the age of 18 you should be alright...best bet is if you have a martial arts licence and it will be use for such, there should be no problem once your not out on the street waving it about like a lunatic or showing of to your mates:)

No, technically they are 'ornamental' and have no restrictions on importing. The problem will be in exporting one from Japan.
Training swords will be no problem but a 'shinken' (literally - true blade) will be classed as a national treasure by the Japanese government and it will be forbidden to leave the country. These days howevere, there are many reputable companys outside of Japan that offer 'real' swords and competetive prices (especially compared to Japanese equivelent). It all depends on what you want it for I guess. Almost anything will do for Iaido but for cutting and so on you might want to check out these chaps

Not yet but its coming that you will need to be registered to own one like the UK.
If your affiliated with a recognised martial art it should be no problem.
