The following information has appeared on the http://www.rtenl.ie/index.asp front page.
DTT transmission in Cork and Greystones
RTÉNL has begun test transmission from our Spur Hill site which serves the greater Cork City area. In early December, we will begin transmissions from our Greystones site. We will be using the following UHF channels which have been allocated and coordinated internationally and licensed by ComReg:

    Greystones 52, 56, 66, 68

    Spur Hill 45, 49, 66, 68.

Some satellite viewers in the Cork city area and those in the Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole and Newcastle areas of Co. Wicklow, may experience difficulties if they use the UHF output from their satellite receivers, rather than a SCART lead, to connect to the aerial input of the television set. This arises as the UHF output from most Sky receivers is tuned to channel 68. We recommend that these receivers should be re-tuned to channel 38. Satellite viewers experiencing difficulties should contact their local installer or Sky service agent for further information on how to change the output channel of the satellite receiver

Does this mean that DTT video is being transmit from Spur Hill now? Or still just the carrier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 279 ✭✭paulhardman

It was only carrier when I checked yesterday, but I will check again tonight (Ballincollig/Ovens area)

Just wondering if anyone in the Greystones area is picking up the DTT tests yet?

Also, what gear are you using...are you using an in-door aerial? external UHF aerial or even tried using a usb stick on a laptop?!

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

Yes but unfortunately sound only. I have an LG TV MPEG2 so I cannot get video which is MPEG4. Four TV and four radio channells.

I have an amplified loft aerial aimed at 3 Rock but only started receiving digital signals in the last week or so. I am in Greystones so I assume I am getting off beam signals.
Antenna is a UHF log periodic with a gain of 6 db. Mast head amp has again of ~16 db. Don't know the beamwidth.

was coming in fine on thursday on my technomate 6900 , then went on and off on friday and seems gone over the weekend. UHF antenna in the loft with a 12db (i think) masthead amp. 95% quality.

I've just installed an outdoor antenna (I'm in the Greystones area), and am getting crystal clear reception of analogue RTE1, 2 and TG4 from the Greystones relay. No sign of any digital reception, though. I'm scanning from CH50 - 68, but nothing found on my Globalteq DTT / Sat combo. It does stall for a while on CH61, but doesn't seem to find anything on a manual scan of CH52, 56, 66 or 68.

Any definite, confirmed reception reports on these channels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭jackbauer

yes i was getting them up until friday on my technomate 6900 on chan 52. They are gone now probably due to christmas. Also had two other chans 62 and 66 i think with full strength and quality but no transmissions probably testing only.

Anybody know if there is anything of Mullaghanish yet? or if not when is it due to begin tests or "go live"

There was solid plans to have DTT transmitting from Mullaghanish by the end of 2008. I don't have a update at the moment, very busy with other stuff.

Groundworks have begun in preperation for the new mast next summer.

They are erecting an even taller mast I believe, if you could find out anything then post back and it would be great. Merry Christmas :)

As I have zero patience I decided to try the 3 Rock transmitter by turning the aerial. Coming in superbly with 87% quality.:D Once Greystones comes on stream fully I will re-point the aerial.

roughly what direction did you point the aerial?

In the direction of Three Rock:D:D:D

Ok - I live in Greystones (near Tesco). From my house Three Rock is roughly midway between Bray Head and the Little Sugar Loaf. I fine-tuned the direction by having my assistant yell out the quality readings on the STB, until they maximised at about 87%. Then I scanned in MUX1 and one channel on MUX3. The aerial is a cheapo 18 element yagi-type from Woodies - I expect it'll probably last a couple of years max. I have no masthead amp. Note that the Greystones relay is vertically polarized, Three Rock and other main transmitters are horizontally polarized.

thanks i'll give that a try tomorrow and work off the turkey:p

    Hi all
Just to let you all know Culagad is where it is transmitting from (that's kindelstown wood to the blow ins) directly behind the esso garage in Blacklion (sorry Rathdown rd)
    Regards D

Yes, I changed it so it's horizontal. I'm picking up MUX 1 on CH54 (RTE TVs and Radio plus TV3 and TG4) and MUX 2 on CH58 (one demo channel showing a loop of video of a chip/component insertion machine at work).
My STB stops on CH61 (MUX 3) and scans for quite a while, but doesn't pick up anything.

Whereabouts are you located? I used to get reception on the laptop on a USB stick during the MPEG2 trial from 3 Rock using the little supplied whip antenna (which had a magnetic base and was stuck to the car roof) down at the harbour in Greystones or even in the main street in Kilcoole, so I always reckoned that a decent aerial on the house roof would work pretty much anywhere in Greystones/Kilcoole unless you were blocked by Bray Head or the Little Sugar Loaf. Anyway, how sad is this... typing on boards on Christmas Day while waiting on the turkey:o:o:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭jackbauer

hey thats not sad. i loaded up on turkey then went into the attic to mess about with the aerial! got rte on chan 54 but only 40% quality. 58 and 61 are flying in at 70%. Might be due to having the aerial in the attic and only single story house. Live down by the rugby club. Last week i had 93% quality from the greystones transmitter but this will do for now.

Has anyone heard anything about when Maghera is going digital? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 ianx

Is anyone using PC based cards (including USB devices) to pick up the new MPEG4 DTT signals?

I'm based in Kilmacanogue and using a MediaPortal based TVServer to ship satellite based channels (FTA) around the house and would like to include DTT.

I'm als not sure if I will be able to get clear enough signals from either Greystones or Three Rock given the local terrain.

Maghera is not supposed to service most of Connemara at all . Casla and Clifden and Cornamona are , same as today.

Magher is not even supposed to service Galway City !!! A new mast on the Hynes Building will .....in 2012

    The point is irrelevant !

Maghera is for Goats on the burren.

Absolutely - since December 2008:D As slegs said - CH52. Just point your aerial (vertically polarised) at the transmitter in Kindlestown Wood. As with all the other transmitters TV3 is replaced with a test card. PM me if you need assistance.

You don't even need to be that accurate with the pointing! Here in Wicklow town the Greystones relay can be received from the side of aerials directed at Arfon!
