Audio problems

I'm having problems with the built-in speakers on my Macbook but I can't figure out exactly what the problem is.

The problem is intermittent where the sound cuts off for a couple of seconds every six seconds or so. It doesn't always do this and often it would play audio completely fine and uninterrupted but it happens regularly enough. The speaker icon would jump to full volume when it happens for the couple of seconds that there is no audio. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem or what I should do about it.

When I'm using earphones the problem doesn't occur at all but sometimes when I remove the earphones (and maybe this is a different issue) there would be no audio at all immediately afterwards until I reboot. If I try to adjust the volume after removing headpones the volume control window that materialises on-screen would show a completely empty audio bar and the round circle with the diagonal line across it.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? Or is my Macbook just being a temperamental little sh*t?
