I have a friend who starts a new job in tommorow.

They are on the dole at present.

His new job have told him that because of the Christmas pay structure he wont actually receive any wages untill January!

He spoke to welfare who told him that he wouldnt be entitled to any welfare as he is actually earning a wage despite not getting a wage until Late January!

What would happen if he kept claiming the dole untill January and then told him he had a job? Whats the odds that welfare would question why he worked and claimed for a month?

    Thanks for your help!

If they wanted to do this they shouldn't have told the welfare officer. Now they know and it may be in their file.
I don't know if they'd check or not but if you want to try it, what you don't do is tell them and then try it.

Getting paid monthly salary can be tough and this 6-7 wait for wages is pretty common.
You could sign off and ask the community welfare officer for money and they will probably ask for it to be paid back. I'm not sure do they do this but you can ask

Or now they have a full-time job so take their contract into a bank and ask for a small loan to keep them going until payday.

They didnt go to their own community welfare officer, they range up welfare and didnt give any details such as PPS!;)

He asked about help returning to work and was actually told that before the budget welfare could have wrote a cheque for €600 Euro to ease the pain of returning to work and purchase items like suits etc, but now the maximum they can hand out is €150!

Also The Christmas Bonus is coming up so obviously my freind dosent want to loose out on this as well. But Welfare told him as soon as he informs them all his benefits STOP!

He was even told by the guy on the phone that he wouldnt bother returning to work at this time of year! (Obviously a very disgruntled member of staff at welfare!)

Bonus is only for long-term unemployed, 390 days plus

    You sure he qualifies?

Joe - you can tell your "friend" that Revenue releases details to Social Welfare Offices of people who are working and signing - so he will be found out. He can't legally or morally sign as being unemployed and fraudulently collect money from the State when he is working. He is leaving himself open to prosecution - not something anyone starting work would like to have on their record. I have never came across a starting work bonus of either €600 or €150 -definitely much confusion and crossed wires from your friend here.

My best advice is to perhaps contact the CWO - community welfare officer, who may be able to advance some sort of loan to help tide your friend over. Personally, I find his future employer's stance very immoral and unsympathetic if they expect someone to survive for some weeks without any payment. Surely they could advance him some salary, even from petty cash - what about the current employees? When are they being paid? Something doesn't smell right to me. I don't think I would want to work for such a company who care very little for a future employee's welfare.

    It's extremly common.
Many companies calculate the payroll once a month so if you start at the wrong time, you face a 7 week wait.
Regalar employees will be paid as normal, it only affects new hires.

And they are usually inflexible about doing anything as they can't change the "system"
No need to be suspicious uolol, if you stroll over to the work forum you'll often get similar issues being raised.
