Trilogies that were never completed

I'm trying to compile a list of trilogies that never got completed.

So far I've come up with:

x Lars Von Triers "USA Land of Opportunity" trilogy (part 3 "Wasington" is on hold indefinetly.)
x His Dark Materials Trilogy (Golden Compass didn't do as well as hoped at the box office and there is at present no plans to film it's two sequels)
x Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings (1st part of this animated trilogy completed in 1978).

Aside from adaptations, obviously guys like George Lucas and the Wachowski brothers only let it be known after the fact that their movies were intended all along to be trilogies so it would be interesting to know if there are any other (original source) stand-alone movies out there that were originally intended to be trilogies based on financiall success.

So can anyone here think of trilogies (quadrilogies etc) that never got completed or currently look like never having their sequels made?

The third Alan Duff book in the "Once were warriors" series was never made into a movie.

The first two "Once were Warriors" and "What becomes of the broken hearted" were in 1994 and 1999 respectively but the final book "Jake's long shadow" remains in book form only.

I think the whole Nightwatch Daywatch was abandoned when the director Timur when off to direct Hollywood films?

No, that was just meant to be 2 films (a duology?).

I'm still waiting for the planned Riddick trilogy of which Chronicles was supposed to be the first. I guess the less then stellar box-office of Chronicles of Riddick have put paid to that.

AFAIK they were going to do the others (or maybe just remake night/daywatch) in English? Can't remember where I read that, so hopefully someone else actually knows. Kind of a kick in the teeth for the russian film industry, considering it's the highest grossing russian film ever.

Von Trier's Kingdom trilogy also remains incomplete.

The third part of Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible trilogy was halted during production and never competed, due to Stalin seeing to many allusions to himself in it.

The film that Greenaway was supposed to make following Prospero's Books and The Baby of Mâcon hasn't been made yet, and he seems to have lost interest in it. It was called Augsbergenfeld and it was set during the Thirty Years War, and was about an anatomist searching for the physical location of the human soul. He wanted to use an all over-60s cast and it was to feature some necrophilia and be shot largely in the dark... he couldn't find financing.

Yup Twilight Watch was going to be focusing on an American Watch squadron, since the Russian story was tied up very nicely at the end of Day Watch. They were gonna have a few cameos from the original stars, but was going to be mainly funded by Fox (I think). Director has mentioned it a few times, never know if it will go ahead or not.

But let us be thankful the Golden Compass didn't do well. Can't imagine how badly they'd mess up the increasingly grim and complex sequels.

    That backfired rather spectacularly! :D

I'm pretty sure the Cronicles of Riddick was suppose to be a Trilogy

I think that War of the Worlds remake by Spielberg was supposed to be a trilogy?

Battlefield Earth was supposed to be a trilogy aswell but the original flopped.

Lost in Space was left open for a sequel but not sure if any were planned before hand.

Unbreakable by M Night Shyamalan was meant to be a trilogy, but the first one didnt really set the box office alight. Its a shame cause it was a good setup for a trilogy, but instead at the end of unbreakable
they just lashed up a load of text, which is always a bit out of place on fictional films.

As far as I know it is to be a trilogy. All depends on when Vin Diesal gets around to it.

Stargate was ment to be one also AFAIK

the two guys in charge went and did Independance Day (which could have been a great sequel to Stargate)

When they went back to discussing an actual 2 more movies, MGM had the rights and spun SG-1

independence day could have spawned a couple of killer sequels.

The matrix. The two movies which followed it should be forgotten imo.

Obviously movies like Elektra, Daredevil, Catwoman etc were planned for trilogies they were just so bad they never bothered.

What about The Sum of All Fears? They did what i call a "Batman Begins" on the genre and brought it back to the beginning. Do you think they plan or were planning a sequel or two to create a prequel trilogy like with Star Wars? E.g. first 3 jack ryan movies were Clear and Present danger, Patriot Games and the Hunt for Red October. Maybe they plan on having another couple of the Tom Clancy books as sequels to Sum of All Fears but prequels to the aforementioned? Which books would they use? I am thinking The Cardinal in the Kremlin as, if memory servies me, and it was about 10 years since I read the book, the principle spy in the book was Spinnaker, who we meet in The Sum of All Fears(movie).

Other ideas for trilogies which never got finished are a third Tomb Raider, a third Ghostbusters and a third Men in Black. Whether its a good thing they never got made, I will leave to your good selves.

The third Ring book was never made into a film. The first two books were adapted in Japan as Ring and Rasen. Rasen was terrible and flopped, so they made their own follow up to the first film as well which was Ring 2 and didn't have anything in common with the second book.

I think there was a really bad Dreamcast game that was loosely based on the third book.

Jurassic Park 4 is still in universal Studio's maybe pile.
Bad Boys 3 is due to be made, if Michael Bay ever finishes with the Transformers franchise.

I hear Unbreakable 2 is in the works to save Shyamalan's ailing career.

Would have loved to have seen the proposed sequels to Serenity. Smashing film in my opinion and Joss Whedon could only have made the rest of the trilogy better.

News just in today! Steve Guttenburg, Tom Selleck and Ted Danson to re-team for.........wait for it.......

Genius! Although I hope the plot is more along the lines of Four funerals and a wedding.

Willow, the Ron Howard directed, George Lucas written fantasy film was originally envisioned as a trilogy. The sequels never happened. I think they were going to be named The Daikini Strikes Back and Return of The Peck. Heh heh.

As a fan of Burton's Batman movies, I lament the film that never was because WB pissed their pants when the mommy's started to get angry.

I remember hearing the words "dinosaur with guns" being tossed around concerning that sequel. So let it stay in that hopefully deep maybe pile.

It's Spielberg so surely it'd be "dinosaurs with walkie-talkies"?
