Just how significant do you believe the performance of Kauto was today?

Some are saying he should be retired, personally I think it is too early for talk of that, though although he is only rising 9, today was his 29th career start.

Debate will continue whether he would have one or not, fact remains he was all out against the likes of Snoopy Loopy, a ten year old who was winning a handicap chase off 108 onlynine months ago, and Tamarinbleu, a horse from a seriously out of form stable who does well to stay this distance.

While I agree his form at Haydock has never been his best, the judge will be out on him in the King George.

If he wins, all will be forgotten, but if he dosn't, Clive Smith and Paul Nicholls will have some big decisions to make in the new year.

    What are your opinions??

I think today was significant for 2 reasons.
It didn't enhance his moderate/good run at down royal the other day and a watching brief is now the only way to go. It will be insignificant if he can put up a bold show in the king george..
so from a punting perspective it's highly significant because it'd be folly to put any money on him in the next race. What it will do is make the next race much more significant..

How the bookies will price him up in the king george will be very interesting.

I can only assume they will keep him odds on, the overly loyal fans will back him whatever the price...

On the unseating sam thomas was definitely at fault, the reins were way too loose or something a jockey friend told me.

It will be interesting alright.. I'd lay him I think on the evidence of today and the other day.. (he didn't beat much there). Though I wouldn't know how to go about it. (betfair I think).

Nicholls horses are out of form too which is another consideration to be made.

Looked to be out of gas when he fell imho, his stamina on bad ground and a trip has got to be suspect.

French breds have a terrible habit of tailing off as they go on.

Belting the 3rd last knocked the wind out fo him badly, meant nothing, 6/4 for the King George is huge.

Interesting point about French breds souring at a young-ish age, ive been thinking that for a while. Start chasing at 4 or 5 and by the time they're 8 or 9 they dont want to know anymore.

It was significant in the sense that he looked to have the race in his grasp until he whacked the third last and had the stuffing knocked out of him. He still managed to rally under pressure and got up alongside Tamarinbleu at the last. We'll never know if he'd have held off Snoopy Loopy, but you can't make reasoned assumptions on the basis that he had a couple of bad jumps. He's been having random bad jumps all his career, yet has still gone on to great things. His stamina was never the greatest, so I imagine that bad jump three out killed any momentum he had. He'll recover from this and win the King George.

    He'll never beat Denman though...

I wouldn't be too disheartened. it came very soon after Down Royal which involved travel and was his first run back. I was actually surprised they went to Down Royal at all. A decent time now to King George and they won't run him in Ascot this year which seen to leave its mark at Chellers last year. And he wasn't impressive in the Betfair last year anyway.

Hopefully I have him backed antepost for it.
