So I bought my fabulous Nike Air Pegasus approx. 450 - 500miles ago. Im wondering is this the source of my hip pain. Question is, when ye reach the 500mile mark do ya automatically update to new runners and retire the old to casual wear??

If you're a heavier runner, or a hard heel striker, or do all your running on concrete: all of these will factor in hastening the demise of your running shoe. Generally, you get about 400 miles or so of training before your runners become sneakers. It's a safe bet that 500+mile runners will add to any hip/joint stress.

I still wear my old shoes for grass running, or the treadmill. But now that I'm accumulating 3 month runners, I throw them away after a particularly muddy grass run, when I don't feel like cleaning them. :)

I always have at least 2 pairs of shoes on the go and allow 48 hours between re-wearing either pair, more if they got a serious soaking. I tend to demote shoes to walking-around-town after 400 miles. It's possibly a bit early but I don't want to risk it.

Marie, I find Nike great for comfort and speed but don't find them as durable as some other brands.

I've found the same - with me, the air in the sole seems to vanish after about 350-400 miles, so the cushioning is gone.

    Hi Marie,
Do yourself a huge favour, follow Hunnymonsters advice and buy 2 pairs. They'll last longer than two pairs bought one after the other, because the support has time to recover between runs and you'll be able to allow them dry out naturally between runs, as recommended.

I'm a loyal Asics fan and have a pair of Nimbus (loads of support, ideal for longer runs) and Cumulus (lighter and better for shorter distances).

I use a black pen to add a notch to the support area for each 10 miles clocked, and then bin them after 400.

When training for the marathon, the one injury I picked up was in my left ankle which pronates slightly; the right is fine. Once I replaced the Nimbus, the injury never reoccured.

So tis very important to replace on a regular basis...

I think I've got about 800 miles on my Cumulus now. I'm a fairly heavy runner but have never had a minute's injury problem. Apart from a twisted ankle or two off road.

I've a brand new pair in the box ready to go. But really I don't feel like binning the present pair until I have to. And the stubborness in me doesn't want to support the overblown running shoe industry. They'd tell you to buy a new pair every 50 miles if they thought they could get away with it :)

But that's only me and I wouldn't encourage others to do likewise, especially beginners to the sport.

Does stuffing old newspaper into them and leaving them by the radiator count as "drying out naturally"?

    Very good idea that.

many thanks for all the advice folks.

My plan is to nip into town tomorrow and get my Asics Nimbus (all €135 of them) and off I go.

Interestlingly, I rang 4 "sports shops" today in Limerick. Only one stock asics nimbus. When I asked the other places if they stock asics nimbus they said "oh yes, what style of them would you like?" I said nimbus, again. Dont think they'd ever heard of them.... Funny the places that get away with calling themselves a sports shop.

    Hi Marie,

Why don't you try startfitness.co.uk for your runners. I use them and I know others have posted here that they also do. I find them good.

Should have hung on for the reduced VAT rate (1st December)! There'll be many more orders for StarFitness and Wiggle from December onwards!

Don't know about start fitness but wiggle now pay irish vat rates. Not a business type person but I understand that if you import more than €X into Ireland you need to be vat registered here? The plus side is that you used to have to pay delivery to Ireland and you don't any more over a certain value.

I see wiggle is doing a preemptive 2.5% off of everything, right now, until the UK VAT rate is reduced on the 1st December.
*Edit: If the seller has more than 100,000 euro of sales in a member state, they must register for VAT and charge VAT at the rate applicable in that Member State ("destination" principle)".

+1 I did this before Dublin and it made a difference. I started getting knee and hip paind from my worn Kayanos and as soon as I started rotating 2 new pairs the aches went away:)

MarieC, have you had gait analysis done? I used to wear kayanos and after having my gait analysed I found out they were a terrible fit for me as I over pronate quite badly (too much to be corrected by kayanos) and I've very broad feet. I use New Balance but there are lots of other brands out there apart from Asics.
