Katie Taylor out scored Australia's Emma Carruthers 20:3 on points in today's opening round of the 5th AIBA World Boxing Championships in Ningbo, a city of 5.6 million inhabitants in China. In the battle of the 22 years olds, Katie was well on top from the first bell and now faces Danusa Dilhofova of the Czech Republic in Tuesday's 2nd round.

Looking very impressive on this opening day was the 22-year-old world champion from Bray's St Fingal's Club.,coached by her Father,Peter, himself a former Irish boxing champion. The 2005, 2006, 2007 European Championships winner and 2008 EU Champion beat Australian national champion Emma Carruthers , only conceding points in the last two rounds, against the Queenslander, from the Gladstone club, coached by Mick Daly.

This, is the 5th and most important World Championship todate, for women as it affords an opportunity for the 237 competitors from 42 countries representing all continents to impress the AIBA and most importantly the International Olympic Committee with a view to womens boxing being included in the 2012 London Olympics. For updates on Katie's progress watch this space on Tuesday.

Katie had a narrow 4:3 win over the Czech Republic's Danusa Danhilova on Tuesday in Ningbo City. She led 3:0 entering the final round but a controversial 2 points penalty, for alleged holding, allowed the Czech back into the fight. Another point and it was 3:3. . Katie's winning point came with but 10 seconds left.

The Irish camp were furious with referee Edouard Hodes decision to award the penalty points and said Irish team manager Anna Moore: "Katie was 2-0 after the first round, went to 3-0 in the 2nd. He gave her a public warning which was unmerited and this brought score to 3-2. "The Czech then got a point from we don't know where and this made it 3-3.At this stage we thought Katie should have been up by at least eight points but she pulled back and won 4-3"

"We have lodged a letter of complaint" confirmed Anna Moore later.

In Wednesday's quarter final, Kartie will meet the Argentinian No 1, Celese Peralta, a quarter finalist in these championships twice before

Good news from Ningbo City as Katie Taylor secured at least a Bronze medal after defeating Argentina's Celeste Peralta when the referee stopped their fight after 2.00 of Round 1 in today's quarter final encounter..
Katie will be in action again tomorrow in the semi finals.
Remember you heard it here first, long before the news reaches other websites or sports forums or the National media!

Sadly no TV or live radio coverage as far as I am aware BUT you can follow her progress and see the scoring LIVE "as it happens" tomorrow morning via the official website:
    www.aiba.org

All 13 finals will have live scores from ringside; Katie's is 7th on the bill
And then of course on 3rd December there is on Setanta Sports Ireland the "Boxing for Gold" documentary part of the "Winning Women" series. In that ,apart from her boxing expertise worth seeing one of her goals for Ireland's soccer team in a European championship encounter; woudl easily qualify for any "goal of the month" award on 'Match of the Day.

There was a significant number of Irish people present at her semi final in Ningbo City today and a pretty noisy rendering of Fields of Athenry so imagine that will also be the case tomorrow morning. Set your alarms!

Magnificent win for KATIE TAYLOR in this morning's World Boxing Championship 60kg Lightweight fight in Ningbo City where she outclassed the local heroine CHENG DONG on a 13: 2 points scoreline. Katie led from start to finish having taken a 4:0 lead in Rd 1 ;making that 9:0 by end of 2nd round and adding a further 4 points in the closing 2 minutes.

I have no doubt but a great reception awaits on her return to Dublin Airport and I imagine another Sportswoman of the Year award too. She deserves no less. This was a truly great performance against an exceptionally talented Chinese woman. Roll on London 2012 especially if as now seems likely Womens boxing is included.

For KT fans who enquired about TV coverage, I understand that there will be a brief interview with her in the main news bulletin on RTE 1 tonight conducted by RTE's Foreign News Editor, Margaret Ward, in Ningbo City for the World Championships; possibly also a few seconds coverage of the Final.
It was a great performance, and also to win Boxer of the tournament award shows how much she is admired throughout the Boxing world.

The standard was very high this year with great performances from India's Mary Kom,winning her 4th World title, and just back after having had twins in August 2007 and also excellent win for Canadian Mary Spencer who regained the title she first won in 2005. Mary was in brilliant form today.

Poland's Karolina Michalczuk was another worthy winner today against England's Nicola Adams, whose silver was the first medal ever won by an English boxer in these championships.

Hopefully RTE will be able to obtain and show Katie's win in full within the next few days as the finals were televised in China.

    End+++

    Congratulations to Katie, brilliant performance.

I have no doubts that Jimmy Magee, one of her greatest admirers for a long time, will ensure RTE show the bout:D

I've been saying it a while now; forget Dunne an Duddy and Lee and Fagan and any other Irsih boxer, Taylor is in a league of her own. Sensational and IMO, Ireland's greatest curent athlete by a MILE.

I'd give her No2 to Padriag Harrington, but she is phenomenal

For those with access to Setanta then (or a pub showing setanta sports), worth watching KT in action in "Boxing for Gold", an Athena sports documentary on Katie this Wednesday 3 Dec at 20.00.

Padraig is NOT the bst in the world. Katie has been the number 1 fighter p4p since 2005/2006. Unbeatable. And Harrington is PLAYING GOLF; I and many others do not even consier this leisure activity a SPORT!:D

    Any reasons as to why?

Padraig Harrington won 2 majors with plenty of prestege behind them, while Katie is amazing and her achievement awesome, the Womens Amateur Chanpionships are as established and hold less prestege as a result.

I'm sure many don't consider boxing a sport, but we both know they both are.

Can you name the women Golfers No1 and do you rate Katie higher as a sportswoman?

PS: Kenny was brought to Harri's house before the olympics and he gave him great words of encouragement

efb, wit all due respect, I can't believe you are asking me that question?

I don't even rate GOLF as a sport; more a game like bowls or draughts or snooker.
It is skillful and requires serious practice and technique, hey, but so does sewing!

So, whoever the best woman golfer is; she is miles behind Taylor IMO!

I can't believe I have to defend boxing as a sport to some and now golf! Bowls is a sport, draughts isn't

    Belated congrats to Katie.

Yet again she proves she is by far and away the best p4p female boxer in the world !! Class act.
