What are you going to be using it for. We can't say whether it's "good" or not if we dont know what you're going to be using it for.

Are you sure that the drive is 20Gb? That's pretty bad.

Also, it will be damn slow, both from a processor perspective, and a memory.

I personally would avoid it like the plague.

The one above is worse! from what i can make out anyway. Try make it clear to read. Give us a budget, what your uses are (more specific than "dossing about"), what about mobility, will you be carrying it around much ect. And tell us what machine it is rather than just posting specs, i have no idea what make/model/retailer you're getting those specs from.

    That's actually worse. :)

The first one had a dual-core Celeron, that one has a single core (think two-brains, vs. one brain).

I basically just need a laptop for home use for checking email and talkiing to friends online. I also need to be able to store photgraphs. Any suggestions? Don't really have any budget.

What type should I be looking for?

Would a Dell Inspiron 1525 be any good?

Buy a dell with the roll back option to XP pro. Lot less hassle, plus vista will be replaced next year

How would I go about that? I have looked on the website and cannot see anything about the roll back option

That's a personal preference, so I would take it with a pinch of salt.

Why would a home user need XP Pro? Vista Basic edition would do fine.

And while there might be a new version of Vista coming out next year, to say it is being replaced is very misleading. A new version is coming out. XP and Vista will still be around.

So Tom would you think the Dell Inspiron 1525 would be ok?

With the £>€ at the moment it might be a good idea to have a look on the likes of ebuyer.com and laptops direct and the hut etc

If you can buy from the U.K let us know,as their is always loads of deals to be had!

i would say go for the downgrade to XP if you could.in that way,you can go for low specs:doenst really need a dual core ,low ram/low video card(you dont go gaming).any good brand laptop from last generation would be enough.

check out komplett, dabs, elara etc easy websites

    this samsung looks good.
    http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=59KV&CategorySelectedId=11105&NavigationKey=11105,15,46400000

    or toshiba
    http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?quicklinx=5BKS&CategorySelectedId=11105&InMerch=1

something in those range, ask if you could downgrade to XP,i remember laptopdirects do that.

    Yes, it would do.

Just make sure that the memory is 2048Mb (same as 2Gig) if you are getting Windows Vista.

I haven't seen any info on the Celeron Dual Core, but I would imagine it would do the job for you. If the budget stretches, go for a Core 2 Duo. You don't really need it, but it would speed things up for you.

Best thing to do is scour some of the websites and post up some specs.

Vista is quite resource intensive. They've only managed to make xp a half decent os, and surprise surprise they have stopped issuing licences to the home user, on giving corporate licences. Vista has not been fully supported yet by software manufacturers as of yet, and not looking likely for quite awhile.
If you ring dell or any of the manufacturers they will help on the roll back.
It's alot more user friendly, and easier to deal with when disaster happens.

I think you are over-complicating matters. Here's what the OP will be doing:

Both Vista and XP will comfortably be able to handle such tasks, so clouding the matter with talk of XP and Roll back is not, in my opinion, helping.

Again, very subjective. How do you know what the OP is used to? How do you know if he/she uses Vista in work/college?

Can we keep this thread on topic please lads. rallyman28, if you want to start a debate on which OS is better you can do so in the windows forum.
    Thanks
    Alan.
