Don't know if this is the place for this,

On Thursday evening I was walking over the O'Connell Bridge and there was a man threatening to jump. There were a lot of fire brigade crew and gardai around. I felt bad walking on but reasoned it was voyeuristic in a way, and that I might get in the way of the emergency services. I'm sure if I was in that bad a way I wouldn't want people gawking at me.

I'd just like to know if he's ok. I know a lot of emergency service people are on these boards so just thought someone may know. Please understand I'm not looking for a sensationalist, dramatic story, just a simple yes or no would do.

I would presume that yes would be your answer. With that much rescue personnel around I would find it difficult for any harm to come to him. even if he did manage to jump the would have been pulled from the water rapidly.

I don't mean to sound cold, but jumping off O'Connell bridge is a piss poor way to kill yourself.

Its about a 3 metre drop to the water.

Yeah I would've thought that myself?. Seems like a cry for help more like.

This person is clearly unwell and I think its in poor taste to be discussing individual cases, particularly when the vultures circle and start commenting on the poor choice of their chosen suicide method

Could a mod close this down?

He was on Fm104 the same night so I assume he is still alive.

Just remember any amount of water can kill.
Unfortunately I have been at a few SRT jobs where rescue attempts were made person disapears under water witnessed before we arrive, SRT personnel arrive and in water less than 1min after last sighting, boat crew on scene and helio but no recovery made its a very dangerous thing water even if it only a cry for help it can kill.
On a lighter note heard of a person who jumped off a certain bridge but landed on a boat passsing under bridge from behind them, they broke their leg it was hard to keep a straight face for that one.

I shouldn't laugh but that's like something you'd see on a hidden camera program on TV :D

I've seen the same maybe 6 months on a bridge further up the Liffey near Templebar but I don't know the name of the bridge.
Some "lady" sitting on the far side dangling above the water. One garda talking to her and suddenly two gardai leaned over and lifted her over.
It was handled quite well imo.
She was put in the garda van and driven away, I've no idea what happened afterwards.

I agree with Metman, this thread could descend into a free for all which certainly would not benefit the man in question nor his family.

However I would consent to a thread which discusses suicide, suicide attempts or the reasons why people try to take their lives if ye so wish but do not mentioned any particular incidents which could reasonably identify a person or the best way for a person to take their own life.

People this is a very serious topic so be careful in discussing it.

View Profile and Feelgood - both your comments I find to be distasteful and insensitive. Please refrain from such comments in future. This a verbal warning only.

    Thanks
