Question regarding encoding MP3s (I think!)

    Greetings,

I've got a lot of MP3s on my PCs hard disk and this Christmas I'm finally getting around to putting the on to an actual MP3 player (yeah I know, but that's just the way things worked out).

The player in question is an Apple Ipod 120gb. My question is this... I've literally thousands of MP3s on my disk and I've been using Winamp to play them but they are all kinds of quality (192k, 320k etc.) and volumes. Before syncing these to my new shiny MP3 player is there anything I can do to normalise or standardise the quality and volume of my MP3 collection?

    Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

It would be 11ty times easier to just download the songs again. Why do you want all songs to have the same bitrate?

You can regulate the volume quite easily, but to regulate the various bitrates would require that you re rip your music....

Of course you can re encode all your current mp3 tracks to a set bitrate, but you will only loose quality in doing that.

It's not so much the bitrate I'm worried about, but more the volume. I'd love to be able to hear all the MP3s I have at the same volume, instead of constantly having to adjust the output depending on how the invididual MP3s were recorded/encoded in the first place.

I'm just wondering if there is any kind of tool or utility I could use to pass all my existing MP3 files through and spit them out the other end in such a 'normalised' fashion.

    Replay gain :D

BUT since you're using an ipod you'll need to use something like ivolume

itunes has this function built in but it is Sh1tE and does not work well... i'm sure you could get a copy of ivolume easy enough...or maybe there is a replaygain plugin for winamp designed to support the ipod?...or have you switched from winamp to itunes?

What you need is the best media management prog available...Media Monkey:D
You can batch normalise and re-encode if you really want to.
Best of all, there is a huge amount of customisable scripts for it.
No program comes close for managing large music collections imo.
    :D

    Have you tried foobar?

Yes. Admittedly it is prettier, but otherwise I prefer Media Monkey.

I tried Media Monkey and it seems to do the trick. It analyzed my collection, tagged it, assessed the replay gain required and now plays it all as required at a decent / controlled volume. The best bit is that it continually monitors my MP3 folder structure for any changes which saves me lots of arsing around.

All I have yet to test is the sync features with my shiny new IPOD when it arrives, but otherwise I'm quite impressed with the little monkey. Thanks for the tip. :p

It'll synch with your Ipod no no bother. You are rid of Itunes!:D
The media monkey forum is full of tips and tricks to make the program work best for you. It really is incredible what it can do once you begin to become familiar with all the scripts.

Great, but couldn't you have just done all this with the Replay Gain function in Winamp? I believe it works through the ID3v2 tags which makes me think it's the same as what you did with Media Monkey?

I could well be wrong though.

Also, I use Winamp mainly - did you find Media Monkey to have much additional use? I've heard it's good but never tried it myself.

    Cheers.

Yes, especially for keeping all my tags accurate and for the file monitor option. There's loads it can do. Also, you can use winamp as your player within media monkey.
