If gold fevour is setting in and your afraid someone will try rob your find, you can try dipping it into mercury. Mercury is also known as quick silver because it will stick to gold. If any real gold is there it will be coated with mercury!

You might also want to be extremely bloody carefull as mercury is horribly toxic.

Do NOT dip it in mercury - as Degsy says, this is toxic - heard of the phrase Mad Hatter?- this is because hat makers used to polish top hats with mercury - and they were all driven mad by exposure to mercury. You will have to bring it to a jewellers, they won't charge you anything. It takes experience to be able to identify metals.

Definitely take to a good goldsmith. But in the meantime, if it feels considerably heavier than a similar sized piece of lead in your hand, then it is gold. As a nugget, it is worth sizeably more also than its weight in gold. 10-15% more often, even for smaller nuggets.

No need to go all the way to Alaska to find them, btw folks ;-)

it is probably late with advice but Ill choose stannous chloride test. It is something anybody can do. you need add the powdered tin (about 1-2 grams) to 20 mL of HCl and heat it up until the tin begins to dissolve. Once the tin starts to fizz stop heating and let it stand for 5-10 minutes. The solution will clear up as the tin dissolves. A little extra tin doesnt hurt as it keeps the solution fresh. use cotton stick and rub nuget with it. Purple/Black color indicates Gold, the darker the spot the more Gold. This technique is mainly for checking for dissolved gold in acidic solutions when gold is disolved. If you want to get pure gold there is way how to do it too...
