Speculative CV

Not sure if the heading accurately describes what I want to ask.

I have decided to move out of my flat within the next week or two and move to Dublin. The reason for this was to be closer to town and the various companies which I might apply to. I have handed out a lot of CV's to a lot of agencies but I very rarely recieve any replies, even confirmations. I was woundering if it was a good idea to print off a good few CV's along with a some cover letters and go around the streets of dublin handing in my CV?

I am mainly looking for admin or junior positions (trainee) I am just getting desperate to start something of a career.

Anyone have any suggestions? I will not know the companies until I am walking past them, so I may not have a cover letter for that specific company, but I will have a cover letter for say, a bank, or a customer service role. Good idea, bad idea?

I just cannot seem to find much on the internet, well the work is there but I don't match the role 100%... 95% and you don't stand a chance. Funny thing is, when I apply for a job I read the spec and I never apply for a job which I may stuggle doing.

Well, here's a link for nearly every junior job in Dublin: http://www.jobseeker.ie/index.php?k=junior&l=dublin

I run a couple of jobsites so I have a fair idea of what the market is like at the moment. There are a LOT of people who are ex-construction looking for work at the moment. As there is no work in construction, they are applying for junior/admin type roles in non-contruction industries. So you have a lot of competition for whatever vacancies are out there at the moment.

My advice to you is to figure out a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Personally, I would try to find out who the HR person is, send your application (nice, relevant cover letter and perfect CV) direct to that HR person, and then give them a ring in a few days to "follow up" on your application.

It's a slightly aggressive approach, but it will get their attention. :)

Don't be afraid to contact FAS and ask for their help. Also, get in touch with your friends/family to find out if they know anyone who is looking for staff. Employers prefer to hire people who are recommended by their employees.

The important thing is to keep looking, keep applying, and make the effort to make your application stand out from the crowd.

    Best of luck.

Do you have a job at the moment? If so, then in the current climate, don't chuck it in without having another to go do.

Also, do work out where in Dublin you're going to live, or else you'll end up on the streets.

Well I have relations that I can stay with. I have that all planed. I don't have a job at the moment, my main reason for moving up to dublin. Planning on going up in the morning but not too sure if I should wear a suit and go door to door... Problem with that is I won't have a cover letter for every company, it will be very general, you know?

It's really tough at the minutel. I went as far as to build a CV website and went all-out on bulk mailing a week ago and landed a grand total of three interviews and two where with agencies. One agency made the point that a lot of departments are waiting on their budgets to see how they will hire and fire in January so it is traditionally a relatively tough time apparently.

So I got a phone call today from Sigmar, I have a meeting with one of the girls this wednesday. Now we have not discussed what job we would be looking at, so as this is my first interview with a stand alone recruitment agency, what do I expect? Do we have a nice friendly casual chat and never hear from them again? I will obviously treat it as a proper interview but with nothing to work on, what exactly can I bring to the interview?
