C&C on a pic of my cat :)

OK I've recently gotten a nice little bridge camera after much deliberation and a few questions on here (fz-28) :) I've got to admit I'm extremely happy with it.

I've decided to start posting up a few images (unfortunately I work from home and the only thing subject that really interests me is my cat) as such the photos are quite boring (for non cat people only hopefully) ... However I'd love to know what people think of them.

This was one of the first photos I took with the new camera I actually really love it maybe its the subject for me. I did a small bit of adjustment with the colour on it and I really love it.

The second I took today I made it black and white again a small bit of adjustment to the photo adjusting reds and yellows. I've always loved piano keys and close ups of them. I couldn't resist the urge to take a few photos of him with the keyboard like that.

I'm not sure how it works on here.

Any comments or C&C on them would be appreciated. Not really sure what I'm after as such so if the shots are crap let me know if they show promise I'd love to know as well.

I like the angled look from the second on ... it was something a friend did (professional photographer) for a photo of when I got married and its really stuck with me.

I've taken a few other shots ... leaves close ups ... powers court ... phoenix park and a few from the city hall the other day and I'm quite happy with them.

I tend to take 4-10 shots and I get one or two I really like.

    Thanks for any input :)
    James

    thanks guys :)

one issue I have with second photo is that the keys are all dusty ... I've not had a chance to play with the keyboard the last while.

B+W really suits the second pic. Very nice.

just for comparison with the second B&W one (I don't have its colour one handy right now)

taken within about a minute of each other so colour / lightening levels would be the same

Like previous posters i like the second in b/w - its really nice. I feel the door handle and reflection of the back of the head in the first one is distracting. I also sense an awkward crop which just leaves things a little unnatural looking. It might look good with a square format crop getting rid of the right hand side.

Love the angled approach in the second. Often, an alternate perspective will make the most interesting of images as i think you've demonstrated in number two.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Linda.

OK I'm going to dump on 3 nature photos here that I took about 3 weeks ago I think (or was it 4)

Don't worry I'm not going to add anything else to the thread :D but I personally think these shots are good ... but ...

the statue was on max zoom and its a pix on the pixilated side but I kinda liked the image

    The waterfalls I quite like

The leaves in focus I like as well

I realise I'm relying on B&W too much to enhance the image ? (is this a good or a bad thing)

I'm actually quite shakey when it comes to taking pictures so I'd guess I'm relying on the cameras anti shake feature quite a bit. (way too much caffeine usually) :D I've got a mini tripod it came with but setting that up and what not would probably take me too long and I'd still need to click the button.

edit: I realise now I really should get myself a flickr account or something. Whats the policy on having your sites on your own website and linking to it ? as in some ways I don't like uploading to a third party site.

Cheers I actually thought about removing the handle from the image :D ( I might still I really like how he's looking right into the camera in it so its one of my favourites)

Yeah I ended up chopping some work related stuff from the laptop screen below ... and the external monitor was just on the left as well. His body is just a bit too something as well as a result makes it feel a bit off balance.

As for the rotating the camera slightly .. yeah it seems to give really strange views for photos that I really like :)

Next ... I move onto a few people shots :D

I'd agree with AnCatDubh about the first cat picture. Personally I try to decide if putting the pic in B&W has any merit - for something like the keyboard one that works out great - obviously it mightn't do much for a sunset :D

If you're having problems with camera shake, there are a number of tips out there. Off the top of my head, here are a few:

    • Tuck your elbows in as close to your body as possible instead of leaving them waggle out to the side.
    • Go down on one knee, put your elbow on your leg, forming a kind of tripod from your body.
    • Sit cross legged on the ground with an elbow on each knee - unladylike, but works!
    • Use walls, chairs, other solid objects to lean the camera on, or lean yourself against.
    • Breath in, squeeze the button, breath out when the picture is taken - don't press and release the button in one go.
    • You're unlikely to get a steady handheld shot at speeds below 1/60 (various factors come into this, but I found it a good rule of thumb to start with). If you're particularly shakey, try take 4 or 5 shots at different speeds to see where your blur starts.

Thanks for the advice ... I tend to wedge elbow against hip bone and take some shots like that ... I also kneel with elbow on knee

Have to try out the breath in ... normally press button .. focus ... hold it until the right time andgo for it

I've no idea of shutter speeds and any technicalities will try having a read over the next little while though and try figuring out the effects
