Barton Fink

A friend of mine loaned me a Coen Brothers DVD last weekend and I'm ashamed to say that it's the first time I've seen Barton Fink.

What a film! Couldn't take my eyes off it and have spent the whole week trying to figure out the meaning of the film. Wondering if Fink and his neighbour Charlie were one and the same person.

John Tarturro was outstanding. Anybody else got any thoughts on the film?

Oh, magnificent film! Absolutely one of my favourite Coen Brothers' films. I think it was probably the first of theirs I had seen. There's plenty of theories about the film, such as the notion that Barton is in hell, but I think the beauty of the film is there's so many ways you can look at it, so many angles and layers. Just a masterpiece really.

It's a truly fantastic film. I'm sorry to say I'd only seen it relatively recently and really regret not seeing it sooner. I really love the producer in it. I've met a few big time hollywood producers and they're all exactly like him. It's like they come from a mould. :D

To anyone who hasn't seen it, what the hell gets you through the day?

Absolutely adored it when I watched it a few years ago (been crying for a repeat watch for ages) but it is one of the most accomplished and complex Coen films - with lots of scathing satire, colourful characters and absolutely astounding visuals. Definitely seems to be a favourite amongst Coen fans, but always seems a bit left to the side when it comes to praising their work, often overlooked for Lebowski or Fargo. But this film really does hold its own against the rest of their catalogue, and may well be their very finest, most personal film.
