Won't play dvd video.

    Trying to repair a friends machine but I need help.

    He is running Vista - no viruses, etc. Totally clean.

    Dvd player will play game cd's/dvd's but when he puts in a clean genuine dvd to watch such as "Lord of the Rings" the drive won't see the dvd or play it!
    (drive set to region 2 - as are the dvd's he trying to play)

    Vista/microsoft update tells me drivers are up to date but I checked with a separate driver check utility (driveragent) and it said the same.

    It used to for the last year since he bought it, only now in the last 2 weeks, it won't at all play/see video dvd - but will still see/play cd/dvd games!

    Anyone know anything about this or can help?

    Is it that it won't even recognise a video DVD or it just won't play them?

    Could it be a Codec issue? Have you tried VLC player?

    If VLC plays them it will more than likely be a Codec issue.

    Thanks for replying,

    Have installed k-lite mega codec pack.

    It will play dvd's if I burn them but it won't play purchased dvd's on the drive.
    The drives spins them then goes dead, does nothing.
    Explorer can't even see the dvd in the drive!
    (even bought a head cleaner, ran it many times)

    The drive will see/play everything else - game cd's/dvd's - music cd's - data cd's/dvd's
    Just genuine film dvd's, no joy.

    Very strange and only happened in the last few while...

    The DVD's are ok because I checked them and they play in my laptop - but not the pc!

    First time I am stumped!

    I had this exact same issue on a brand new Dell Laptop about 2 weeks ago.

    I couldn't solve it so I contacted Dell & they were kind of aware of the issue without actually holding their hands up (if you know what I mean).

    They actually remote connected to it but got nowhere with it.

    Eventually they asked me to return it (it was only 2 days with the new owner).

    When the owner received the new replacement it done exactly the same thing (wouldn't play original DVD movies but would play a self burned copy).

    Dell recommend the the owner return it again for a different model :eek:

    So there's definitely something afoot with this particular issue & it appears to be related to Vista only.

    The issue this end is still not resolved because the owner does not want a different model.

    Mine isn't a Dell, its a Compaq.

    If I don't get it resolved soon, I'm going to have to replace the whole drive and see/hope if that will help.

    If I knew what Microsoft update it was (if thats the cause) I'd remove the damn thing but there's loads of updates - bloody Vista gets at least one or two every month!

    Have you tried restoring it to an earlier restore point (if one exists)?

    One of the first things I tried.

    I suspect its something in bloody Vista - gawd awful operating system that it is.

    I wonder if it could in anyway be related to this?

    delete files in the DRM folder
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM (DRM folder is hidden)

    (Have saved that page and will try it as a last resort before buying new drive.
    Messing around with DRM might effect every media type file on the pc)

    I don't get any error messages though. Just no no playing of the video dvd.

    Well, for what it's worth Biggins, I tried a different drive on the Dell I spoke about earlier & it made no difference. But you never know, if you have one try it.

    Aye, I'm sure its a software problem.

    Tried the above suggestion in the link and got the message "The Windows Media service is not Started"
    So that tells me nothing (when the problem is effecting all software video playing tools) and does nothing.

    Shaggin' Vista for you. A complete mess of an operating system.
    The boys at Microsoft must be so proud of themselves - NOT!

    Still leaves me up crap creek in the meanwhile without a clue!

    Its easy to blame the OS when you dont know whats wrong.

    You said you checked that the drivers were up to date but did you do an actual check? Find the drive model online and look for drivers. might even be some homebrew ones out there that wouldnt show up on your autocheck, that could potentially solve the problem. Much in the same way HP only ever released 2 video drivers for my laptop, and now there are 30 newer such ones available at homebrew sites.

    Checked direct with HP - their latest driver was sp26944(.exe)
    I'm paid up to two separate driver sites. Both report my drive driver is up to date also (as well as windows update)

    My drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L

    Searched everyhere for a later driver. No joy.

    Biggins, I know this shouldn't be relevant but, I notice the DVD drive is assigned the letter E:\. Why don't you re assign it to D:\ & see if it reads the legit DVD's?

    Thanks. The sad news is that I applied it and it didn't make any change to the problem.
    Message I get is "This drive's F/W(S856) is the Same as NEW F/W BIN File(S856)"
    So the installed driver is up todate. Bummer. :(

    I'm grateful your giving me your time so far. I appreciate it. ...so far your the "man" :)

    I will just have to keep trying...

    Going to try chat Monday. I presume they are off at the mo (weekend).

    Its mad. Its a top quality pc and very fast too. Great graphics, hard-drive 5 % full.
    Just the drive now is a pain.
