Going to Cork by train 7am next Thursday. Is there still a stampede for the dininfg car when it opens? What time does it actually open at? The Savy travellers used always queue 10 mins before it opened, when the announcement was made you couldn't get a seat

The dining car won't open straight away so you will be fine; it's usually about 15 minutes in :)

I haven't eaten on a train in years. Has the food quality improved?

On that 0700 Heuston-Cork service, the Citygold passengers are served first at their seat, and depending on how many are having breakfast (it could be up to 30 breakfasts), this can take some time. So, there is no strict time when the restaurant car opens for the standard class passengers, however I'd head in that direction shortly after leaving Heuston and have a look. The dining car is coach B on the train.

Well I don't think that there was ever any issue with the standard of the breakfasts that were on offer. They're still up to the mark!

On certain afternoon/evening services a bistro service is offered but with a restricted range of main courses, which are certainly reasonable.

The breakfast on the train is one of the very few breakfasts that is cooked from fresh, pricy but worth it for novelty alone.
