I had a bit of time off yesterday and the weather didnt seem too bad so I decided to take a few shots in the Zoo. C&C welcome, All shot with a 5d and 1dmk3 with 135L and 120-300 f2.8. 135L is working out really well, so sharp. Many thanks to www.Pix.ie for continued excellent hosting, all images clickable to see fullsize versions which is worth it especially the Gorilla's hand..

This is a lovely set, there are some great original angles which is unusual for a set of Zoo shots.

I find the silhouette and the hand quite poignant. I love the way the sealion looks like a bronze statue!

    No. 4 is my fave.

I'd like to see a little more detail show through on the chimp silhouette no.2 - just a little.
(edit: just looked at it on my bright laptop screen and you can really see the detail on him - work monitor is darker... interesting)
Great shots and wonderful advert for goin to the zoo!

Wow! You got a good day for shots.....Loving No.3
    100% Outstanding set altogether Borderfox.

Great stuff! You sure didn't waste that day. Great set of shots, I especially like 1, 2, 4 & 6.
I took a few minutes to look at the hand large as you advised and boy was it worth it. The detail is incredible and I didn't appreciate the narrow dof until I saw the large version. Good job Keith.

Keith. Those are really great. Love the gorilla hand.

Jazus Keith what a shot of the hand. The DOF is absolutly amazing. Well captured. It makes me soooooo now want to upgrade my 70-300 to a 2.8. I just hope my wife is reading this and get the hint :D, it's either that or I'll just have to keep saving.

The rest of the shots are great as well. Well done.

3, 4, 5, and 6 are some of the best pics I have seen of their genre on this forum in the year I have been on!

    Well done!

Lovely shots - especially the tiger.

One question on the lens - does it have IS or do you tend to mount on a tripod anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

Everything was handheld in the Zoo. At a push I would use a monopod but only if I was using the lens for over an hour solid otherwise it is handy enough to hold. No IS on the Sigma but its f2.8 and if you look at the Snowy Owl shot that was shot at f5 and ISO 400 and it has superb resolving power. The 135L from Canon is such a good lens too.

Really nice pics like them all!
But im on a cheap laptop,
And 1 in very under exposed and blown out,
And 6 is abit over exposed..
    Is it just me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

I am on a calibrated screen and it looks fine, 1 is a bit hot but thats the way it looks to keep the translucency of the water and I spot metered on the Gorilla in 6 as the background would throw the metering off if I let it.

Thanks for the comment though :)
