    New to Dublin.

Looking for a decent cafe. Non chain. Doesn't have to be hardcore ethically sourced coffee. Just good coffee, good atmosphere and added bonus, but not essential, would be decent smoking area.

Ideally the kind of place that will barely get by competing with starbucks et al.

    Any suggestions welcome

The Bald Barista on Aungier Street is probably the best I've been into in Dublin. Under new management now I believe though.

any of the Dunne & Crescenzi cafés are reliable. Basically anywhere that sells Pombali coffee. The food is pretty damn good too!

Buzz has moved his operation down to the Avalon House hostel (just down the street from what is now known as Darwin's cafe). Popped my head in there the other day, looks a bit ramshackle to be honest. Buzz wasn't around, and although his other baristas are generally ok, I moved on.

The options for a decent sit in café are soooo limited. The Dunne & Cres and La Corte places serving Palombini can be ok, but I've had poor stuff from them too. If you don't mind standing, then Michael Kelly (Ariosa) will give you a nice shot / cappa down at the Temple Bar market on a Saturday. Or you could try the Coffee Angel van on the quays down at the IFSC during the week.

Bewleys on Grafton St generally take more care than most places, and the milk tends to be very good. I find their espresso blend just a little boring though.

I suspect in Fallon & Byrne it is possible to get good coffee, but I think it comes down to luck, and who is preparing your coffee, cause I've had crap there too. (Although I admit I haven't been there in months).

Did someone mention Shebeen Chic as a destination?

You CAN get decent filter coffee in Starbucks. Wouldn't touch anything made with espresso or steamed milk, but I've had very drinkable filter stuff in there. (again it has been quite some time, so this may have changed since).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been past the bald barista a few times cool name/ sign but something stopped me going in. Will check it out, and the other suggestions over the next week or so.

It was always owned by Darwins. I think Buzz had a small stake in the business.

Darwins run an excellent restaurant across the road, so I would expect the quality levels to remain high.

(I think the Bald Barista is majorly overrated though.)

Yeah the D&S places are no different than other cafés in that the person drawing teh coffee needs to know what they're doing. In fairness in D&S they usually do but I've had a few dull ones there too.

Coffee Angel is an oasis in the gray mire of coffee sellers. Those guys are operating at a much higher level.

That new place beside Anseo on Camden Street is nice. Pier 19 I think it's called.

They do meals and whatnot but I've dropped in for just a coffee no hassle. Nice it was too.
