4th Year Structural Engineering Student Seeking Work Placement

    Hi All,

I am a 4th Year Structural Engineer currently studying at UCD and as part of our coursework we are required to complete an 8 month work placement commencing in January. I attained a Bsc degree last June (2nd Class Honours) and worked in a design consultancy for the duration of summer 2007 gaining experience in Surveying, surveys, AutoCAD and Planning Applications.

My lecturer and I have written to a lot of Structural Engineering design consultancies and naturally with the recession the response has been slow in Ireland and I don't really want to go abroad (Although I will as a last resort).

I was just wondering if anyone here knew of any companies that are willing to give me an interview or has any ideas, it would be much appreciated. If anyone needs any further information such as C.V. or cover letter please PM me.

    Thanks in advance

True. I'm in third year structural engineering in cork, hoping to get experience in a design consultancy next summer in Dublin if possible. Should I send in CV's everywhere? What companies offer student placements there?

Send every where. If you really want it you may have to do an internship

I'd be willing to work for free if any of the people in design consultancies manage to see this, its imperative I get work experience

no, i was offered a half year placement in Switzerland which i turned down, iirc it was for the summer and first semester. you are probably too late now for 09 but i would definitely try anyways. i was in qub so my contacts in iaeste wouldnt be any good to you, maybe neadi could help you. also its not a thing of booking a place, well it wasnt in qub anyways there was a good amount of competition for places.
