I need to replace a tyre on my car its a 225/55 r17 W the prices I am getting quoted seem mad.

The prices in the North make the trip worthwhile as I can bring the wife and get some shopping done too. However as I would prefer to spend my money in the South.

Anyone have any suggestions, experience based, on good value tyre places in Dublin. Also looking at the tyre wear I suspect the car will need to be tracked as well.

The only place I won't be going is Blakes Cross as they made an absolute mess of the tracking on my last car and I had serious issues with them to get it resolved.

How much wee you quoted, for how many tyres, what brand, are you looking for premium brand like Goodyear, Pirelli, Dunlop or just something to keep the car legal?
Goodyears should be available for about €125-€130 each for that size including fitting & balancing. 225/55/17. Got this price recently for two front tyres on my car in Cork, Treadwell. Can;t see why you couldn't match it somewhere reasonably close to you.
If you are going budget you should be able to get a tyre for €80 or so.

Pat Clifford tyres in Clontarf. I got Goodyear Eagle F1's 215/45/17 for 135euro a tyre.

Dave McCann in Blanchardstown should be ok for prices and he has a cracking alignment system aswell.

I get my tyres online from camskill.co.uk and shipped and fitted for €15/corner

Yes but you have to factor in extra for having them fitted. Just shop around and compare prices as the savings you can make on eirtyres can be cancelled out by the price of having them fitted.

I still saved €160 through camskill versus the best price over here after calling around a lot of local and national companies.
That was factoring in fitting/disposal/new valves at €15/corner too.

    Eiretyres has nothing on camskill.

I was getting quotes of 125 & 130 euro for Pirelli tyres, 205x55xr16

So I went up north and got the same for 75euro each balaced and fitted! saved me 200!!

I will be defo going back up with my 2nd car next weekend to save another 200!!

by the way i only had to drive to enniskillen. not a million miles away at all

its just another example of the RIP of IRELAND that we live in.. I went to at least 4 dIfferent garages down here & only (1) up north.

camskill do seem very good. About 30% better than eiretyres and others.

What do ye think of Nankang tyres? They are cheap. I had them on my last car and quite liked them although not very long lasting.
Interestingly, when I was getting them, the tyre guy brought out the Nankangs and also a set of top brand tyres(Cant remember which, maybe bridgestone) and they were identical and I mean identical from the thread pattern to the amount of rim protection, the look of the tyre etc.

I bought two sets of 215/45/17 Eagle F1s from Camskill. Cost me €170 or so in total. Delivered two days later. The best price I got in Dublin was €150 per tyre. Now, I will have to pay €20 or so to get the tyres fitted, but thats still around a €100 saving!

    PPL, I was being facetious - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=facetious:D
How can a bit of facetiousness be a waste of time? Please lighten up.
TBH, there is stacks of previous threads on here about tyres. Did the OP not do a search which is encouraged if you have a query prior to posting?
But, its ok Peasant, shoot me down at your first chance like you always do - sure why not ban me too?:)

I did carry out of search of the tyre related topics before posting this. While many suggested places to actually purchase the tyres (not an issue for me), none actually quoted the names of places where this could be done most inexpensively, i.e. for €15 or less per corner.

Any experience of low cost fitting and balancing where you bring your own tyres appreciated.

I used Dave McCain in Coolmine, €60 for fitting & balancing. He also has a super advanced alignment laser machine, its €35 for the front end and €70 for all four wheels.

Yes - I have been to Dave McCann to buy tyres a few times alright - good guy and good service to be had there.

For those of you purchasing tyres from abroad online - I found this.....

"Malahide tyres charge €5 per tyre fitted and balanced. They are quite professional there too. I was up with them today getting my alignment done and I ask them if I bought tyres on-line would the fit and balance them for me and they said yes, a fiver a tyre. I thought that was good value.
    Malahide Tyres 01-8403856"

Seems like a great deal - I have some tyres to fit and will be going here !

I got a flat at the weekend and when I took the wheel off I found the inner wall of the tyre was badly worn and looked like it was about to rip off (I had probably driven a few miles before realising it was flat - it wasn't immediate). Gave the other tyres a look and though they seem ok, I'd prefer to just replace the lot of them for peace of mind.

Not having bought tyres before I was at a complete loss but I've searched around here and found some of the basics but still have many newbie questions - e.g. do I just go for summer tyres or all season tyres for normal driving in Ireland?

My car is a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T petrol and I think the alloys on it were an upgrade. Side of the tyres (though I'll need to confirm front & back are the same) says '215/45ZR17 87W'.

Based on that, I figure I need 215/45/17 tyres such as the ones listed here on camskill.co.uk - is this right?

I'm happy to spend around €400 all in if it'll be worth it instead of skimping on budget tyres. Between camskill and eirtyres there are options for Goodyears or Pirellis for under €100 a piece (corner?) - is it worth going with those or for 10,000km per year would I not notice much difference over the ones a level below?

I live in Crumlin and work in Sandyford so would probably be handiest to bring the tyres to some place near Sandyford for fitting during work. Know any decent places around there that will do a decent job for reasonable price?

What's the difference between balancing and re-alignment and is it worth me doing both?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for any pointers.

    Quickly,

Replace the size's you have - like for like.
I like goodyears, Pirellis are ok too, both will do well over 10k
You'll expect to pay up to €80 to get them fitted and balanced.
Tracking is extra and essential in your case.

I was just on the phone to Eddie in Kwik-Fit. Really nice chatty sort of guy.

Anyway, he quoted me £140 (currently 157 euro) for a set of budget tyres for my little Suzuki, and the best I've found in Dublin so far is 200 euro a set (Santry), so I'm quite impressed.

Not sure if the drive up and back is worth 43 euro, but I'll think about it.

    ____

By the way, if I was to buy tyres seperatly, does anyone know somewhere in Dublin where tyres will be fitted at a reasonable price?

I'm a bit wary of budget tyres. My current set being dire in the wet. When I rang aound dublin no one had any known brand in stock. everyone had about 5 brands of tyres I'd never heard of?

    Were Toyo's mentioned?
    Nexens?
    wha?
