I can understand when the bcc (another station funded by tv licenses) offer such large wages to their top stars they are bidding against other companies like sky and channel four for their services, it’s still not right, but I can understand how the system works. But who exactly is going headhunt the likes of Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubridy. In theory RTE could pay them minimum wage as I don't see any large UK sation stepping in to offer them more, they'd have to take it and TV3 would probably struggle to match RTE's offer.

No. I only started to listen to Gerry Ryan on the radio after he was on The Late Late. Just to see what he was like. Dear god he's irritating! Pat Kenny seems fine on the radio but still none of them are worth all that €€€. I like Ryan Tubridy :o

I like Ryan Tubridy, I think his show is a lot more entertaining and has much better guests then the late late

I still find it hard to believe Kenny is paid 1.1m a year. Even worse is that gob****e Ryan who is on close to 600,000.

Fact of the matter is that if they went over to the UK there wouldn't be a hope of either of them getting work on TV/radio so theres absolutely no reason why RTE and by extension the taxpayer should be paying those kinds of wages.

I think that a talentless Canadian singer has no right to criticise anyone.

No denial on the love front though.

We might have found the girl who can defrost the cold, cold Tubridy's heart!

I haven't listened to any of their shows in quite a while. Do they all (along with Joe) still get 3 months holidays in the summer?

if the word AMIGO roughly translated into super annoying ******s, then these would be the three amigo's.

I believe his radio show pulls in over 3 million per year euro in advertising. Hence, the large salary.

Of course it's a national station and a prime slot but it's not costing license payers anything. 2FM is self-sufficient on advertising revenue

None of them do, including Joe - did they ever?

Are you confusing their radio shows with The Late Late Show and Tubridy Tonight, which go off air for the summer months?

There is obviously a correlation between the amount that you earn and the Dickhead Factor Percentage. For every 100K you earn, your DFP increases by around 30% I think...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,094 ✭✭✭✭javaboy

Pat Kenny - Not worth the money - Could be replaced with a large piece of low grade plywood and nobody would notice.

Gerry Ryan - Not worth the money - Could be replaced with a pudgy, egotistical, thinks-he's-funny, annoying, ugly, whiney, tries-to-act-half-his-age absolute wa**er....... except they haven't been able to find another one yet.

Ryan Tubridy - Worth the money - I used to hate Tubridy. I thought he was trying to be much older than he is and he came across as an irritating bore but he's come on a lot in the past couple of years. He really has a genuine interest in his guests and their topics especially on the radio show.

Are you implying a causal relationship there? i.e. you become more of a dickhead the more you earn? Or that you earn more the more of a dickhead you become?

    Which comes first?

have to agree, I was of the same opinion. he is the only one of the 3 that actually listens to peoples answers after he asks a question. In term of if they are worth the money it seems they will all be asked to take a pay cut as the wages come partly from advertising revenue which has dropped a lot.

Possibly. I thought Duffy and Ryan would go missing for a few months in the summer. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Well they get very good holidays all right (probably about a month) but they're not gone for the whole summer.

Ah come on, that's not fair. Sky could employ Plank Kenny to stand on a busy London street, with a sign pointing to the nearest Sky dealer nailed to his wooden head. ITV could employ Turbidy to scrub the shit off their canteen toilets, I think he'd be very good at it. The BBC could have Ryan shot and use his bloated, flyblown corpse as a draught excluder.

I have a great idea for a ratings-winning programme that would employ those three stooges to good effect. It's based on those Al-Qaeda hostage beheading videos and would involve me sawing the heads off Plank, Ryan and Turbulence in front of a live studio audience. If anyone from RTE is reading this, I'm available to start filming now and I'll do it for half of what Kenny costs.

When my friend was 10 he went to get gerry ryan's autograph and ryan told him to go fu#k off. Arrogant fat sh!te.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 106 ✭✭AvrilLavigne

    Irish Examiner Monday, October 13, 2008 :
UNDERPAID, under-appreciated and under the influence — sounds like the kind of character who might ring the Gerry Ryan Show on a Monday morning to share their disgruntlement with the nation.

But the character in question is Ryan himself who, according to his memoirs, drinks too much, is paid too little and receives way too little credit from the critics.

In the forthcoming Would The Real Gerry Please Stand Up, the 52-year-old broadcaster admits to regularly downing a third of a bottle of whiskey and drinking in an average week three times the alcohol limit recommended by doctors.

Unrepentant, he says drink is part of who he is and the lifestyle he leads, and doesn’t believe his career has suffered.

“Alcohol has definitely made me less healthy than I should be, but I don’t think I’ve paid any price professionally for my drinking,” he writes.

“For better or worse, the Gerry Ryan you listen to on the radio, or watch on the television, is a guy who drinks too much. That’s part of the package.”

Ryan, who is one of RTÉ’s biggest stars, earning almost €600,000 for his morning radio show on 2FM, reveals he came close to leaving the station last year after starting negotiations with Newstalk on a package “worth several millions more” than RTÉ’s offer.

He says he should be paid at least as much as top earner, Pat Kenny, whose salary is close to €900,000. The negotiations with Newstalk dragged on, however, and Ryan eventually signed a new contract with RTÉ, although he reveals that the last words he heard from Newstalk owner, Denis O’Brien, on the matter were: “Well, maybe next time...”
What a nób this guy is!

    QFE

Dudess you're wrong...they mightn't get it all in one lump but I'd be surprised if any of these guys did more than 40 weeks worth of solid broadcast in the year.
Every mid term break or other small school holiday and any of the big guns in RTÉ go on the missing list (as they're entitled to) and they also get an extended summer break with locums filling the void.

As for them being worth the money? No. Especially not Ryan...can't believe what I just read in his autobiog extract above...what an egotistical knob jockey.
Kenny is ok on the radio but as the LLS presenter? Deeply flawed and not worth half of what he gets for that game IMO. Even Ryan was better than him the other week. Scary.
Tubridy I don't personally warm to, too much smarm and fake suavity, too much accent and too much chin. he's probably the better host of the three but I still can't abide by him.

Who in Ireland is going to outbid RTÉ for these guys? Denis O'Brien? UTV?
    Wise up.

Actually I was referring to a post that implied they get the entire summer off, which they don't. I never said they don't get sh1tloads of holidays throughout the year.

I don't mind Tubridy - he can be pretty funny at times! I hate that stupid band that he has on his show though - that Clint Velour (or whatever his name is) bugs the hell out of me.

Pat Kenny - he's very wooden and oh so dull, but I'd say he's a genuine, nice enough person. As long as you don't go fighting with him over a fence.

Gerry Ryan - always hated him. Self absorbed, irritating twat. Get rid of him.

Agreed. The band are brutal and the lead singer bugs the hell out of me too. He's a Twat.

Cannot bear to listen to any of them - one worse than the other. Is this the best we can do on our national station?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,358 ✭✭✭Dennis the Stone

God Tubridy annoys me. What's your favourite programme Ryan? Why don't you tell us. Oh hang on, you did, about 700 times. Every time I read an interview with him or hear his radio show he's telling us how much he loves the West Wing. Even today he had to get it in. He doesn't like Six Feet Under or The Wire but he loves the West Wing. Nobody cares Ryan. Also, stop hyper-flirting with every female you come in contact with.

As for Gerry Ryan... Stop scoffing doughnuts on air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,986 ✭✭✭Red Hand

I think Pat Kenny should change his name to Pat Gerry. So if you lined up their names, you'd get:

Pat Gerry, Gerry Ryan, Ryan Tubridy.

And then you could shorten it all to Pat Gerry Tubridy (as opposed to the father, Pat Timmy Tubridy)

    I like symmetry.

Or maybe we could send all three of them on a mission to pilot an oil tanker through the Suez Canal. I hear those Somalians are in need of quality tv/radio presenters:D
