I have an ipod touch 2nd gen, that just won't play nice with my Zyxel router with WPA-psk or WPA2-psk encryption

it will connect if I use WEP encryption so i know it's not the wifi card

but I have other devices on my network that don't like WEP

and WEP is considerably less secure

so at the moment every time i want to connect i have to re-config the router

I have scoured forums looking for a similliar case but have found no sollution
it's not a case sensitive password issue,
I have hit "forget network" and tried to re-login,

but I can find no solution

    any ideas?

I'm using wpa-psk n a few different routers and have had no problems, only think i can think of off the top of my head would be make sure MAC filtering is turned off in your router settings.

    cheers amull87

    nope mac filtering is off

802.11 mode is set to mixed for both G (laptop ) and B (mobile phone) - i wouldn't think that would make a difference.

    totally stumped?

Is this a Zyxel P660HW-61 by the way?

yep it's a P-660HW-D1 - are you going to give me bad news?

I'm also exploring the possibility it could be router firmware related, and i've downloaded the latest firmware for the P-660HW-D1 but I get an error while installing. I've emailed xyzel, but I'm still awaiting a response :(

The router doesn't play well with giving out WPA wireless goodness - either stick with WEP or maybe it's time to change your router.

the weirdness is that it works fine with the laptop and WPA-psk and WPA2-psk

Just going on my own experience here as I've worked with them a lot.

Can you tell me, what Firmware Version is on your iPod Touch? Is it jailbroken?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭eske

    version 2.1.1 (5F138)

    not jailbroken

Ok, reset the router and reconfigure it again, give the router a new SSID, channel and WPA-PSK key and try again because you should have no issues with that FW version.

    Many Thanks for the advice

i'll roll back to factory settings on the router tomorrow morning and see how i get on from there,

    cheers

I've reset the router to factory settings
i've setup a new wireless network with different ssid and password
    using a different channel

still the touch comes up unable to join the WPA encrypted network

my only hope now is to hope zyxel get back with a fix to the firmware problem and maybe ....

till then i'm unhappily stuck using WEP

Well being with WEP is ok, like it's easy to hack Eircom WEP for obvious reason but your own custom one won't be easy - were not renound for wireless hackers over here, are providers are too ****ty anyway ;-).

Last bet would be to do a backup / restore with your Touch and try again.

actually just been over on the ilounge forums, there are quite a few threads covering an accepted WPA encryption problem on the 2nd gen touches

    this one covers it

    http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=236700&highlight=wep+wpa

ah yeah WEP is fine for a while i suppose, but I'm like ... it's brand new - it should work .... was convinced i was doing something wrong :)

    cheers for the advice
