I've just got an ipod touch (1st apple purchase ever) so trying to come to terms with it

I listen to audiobooks (ripped from cd's)

these don't show in the "audiobook" folder in the touch

probabaly cause there not from itunes

so when i'm playing these large mp3 tracks and i pause and turn off the player I would expect the next time I turn it on for it to play from that point.

but no - this is a pain in the ass when you've 20 mp3's all 45 mins lonmg and you've no clue where you last were.

is there a work around here?

how do the rest of you manage with podcasts?

is there an audio bookmarking facility?

    any ideas?

    cheers eske

The problem is your ID tags. Get something like mp3tag to edit them. And make the file known as an Audiobook (It may be that it is now showing as "Spoken". Then you can use the book mark function. Which is what you are after :)

I am a huge fan of audio books so here are sometips for ripping. Even though I have a creative Zen I use iTunes for ripping. When you insert a cd select all and choose get info. In there you can set the tags. Then under advanced you can choose Join. This makes a CD one file. Very handy! You need to go through the options first so it asks you to rip etc. Not have iTunes do it when you insert a CD etc.

I still have issues with the playing sequence so I use a tool, costs about $10 but free to try for a week or so, called cool MP3 splitter, which has a join feature, to join all those files into one big one.

    Hope some of that helps.

THANK YOU !!!!!! soo much for the comprehensive answer.

    so it's id tags -

I'm assuming it "genre" that I should change to audiobook"

i wonder does "podcast" get a similar effect - there one to try

    thanks again

    strange

I've tried changing the gen re to audiobook and to podcast

but the files don't show up in those genres on the touch (fine on the pc)

so not getting any bookmark options?

    Hi,
This might work, it does with songs anyway.
When you're done- keep play button held down. This will power off the ipod. To listen again press play and it resumes where you left off.

If doesn't work have a look at ilounge, good ipod site.

i have a collection of radio dramas myself. what i do is just pull the earphone connector. playback stops and if you want to continue plug the connector back and press the play button

I'm convinced I'm missing something here

if i pull out the cable, yes playback pauses

but if i turn the device off

when i turn back on I've totally lost that point.

how do I get back to that exact point in the podcast without manually forwarding to it?

i would expect hitting the menu key twice would bring up currently playing but it brings up another song???

i dunno... my one works like this:

start playback, leave on playback screen (do not go back to main screen), switch display off, put iPod in your pocket, listen to music.

just pull the cable during playback (do not switch on the display, do not touch any button) - playback pauses automatically, display stays black.

    ...

plug in cable, press the on/off button, slide to unlock, the normal playback screen is back, touch play button - playback from texactly the same point when cable was pulled.

works with all kind of mp3 files. dunno if it works with podcasts, i'm not using/listening to podcasts

yeah we're talking about the touch

weirdest yet is it always resumes at a royskopp tune regardless of what i had been playing.

iPod and iTunes require the file to be in a specific format to identify and treat it as an audiobook.
